Chapter 13 - The New Beginning

Six months later, Ryan, Maya, and Oliver were settled into a bright, two-story craftsman house in a quiet neighborhood three towns away.
The new home had broad windows that let in the morning sunlight, and a large backyard with a wooden swing set.
Oliver ran across the fresh grass, his laughter ringing through the afternoon air.
His breathing was strong, his cheeks flushed with healthy color.
Maya sat on the back porch step, sketching in a notebook, her face relaxed and free of the tension that had gripped her for years.
Ryan walked out from the kitchen carrying two glasses of iced tea.
He handed one to Maya and sat down beside her, pulling her close.
"How is the new garden coming along?" he asked softly.
"It's perfect," Maya said, resting her head against his arm.
"It feels real, Ryan."
"No hidden motives, no heavy expectations."
"Just us."

Ryan kissed the top of her head, watching Oliver chase a butterfly across the lawn.
"Just us," Ryan agreed.
