Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Whitmore Trust

By seven o'clock the next morning, the legal storm began.

Ryan sat in the hospital cafeteria with a paper cup of black coffee that had gone cold.

His phone buzzed repeatedly on the Formica table.

The caller ID displayed the name of Arthur Pendelton, the senior partner of Pendelton & Associates, the firm that had managed the Whitmore estate for three generations.

Ryan swiped his thumb across the screen and brought the phone to his ear.

"Ryan," Arthur's deep voice echoed through the speaker.

"I have received four calls from the precinct this morning."

"Your mother is currently being held without bail pending her arraignment."

"Good," Ryan said plainly.

"Keep her there."

"You don't understand the scope of this situation," Arthur said, leaning into a tone of grave warning.

"Evelyn holds controlling interest in the primary trust."

"If she is indicted on felony child endangerment and assault, the board will freeze the family assets."

"That includes the deed to your house and the funding for Oliver's specialized medical care."

Ryan gripped the paper cup until the cardboard crumpled.

"My son almost died because of her scheme, Arthur."

"Tell the board they can freeze whatever they want."

"We are going to court, and I am putting her away."
