Chapter 8 - THE TRUST

Ryan thought Andrew was lying.

Then Charles confirmed everything.

The Whitmore family trust had been created by Ryan’s grandfather.

Most of its assets were locked until a third-generation heir reached certain conditions.

Oliver was the first qualifying descendant.

If Ryan died or became legally incapable of managing Oliver’s interests, control could transfer to the child’s legal guardian.

Ryan stared at his father across the dining room.

“How much money?”

Charles answered quietly.

“About ninety-two million dollars.”

Maya stared at him.

“Ninety-two million?”

Ryan’s stomach turned.

Suddenly every piece fit.

The custody papers.

The psychological claims.

The forged signature.

Destroy Maya’s credibility.

Create instability in Ryan’s marriage.

Push Ryan into a public breakdown.

Then place Oliver under Evelyn’s control.

It wasn’t only obsession.

It was money.

Ryan called Detective Morris.

She listened.

Then asked, “Who else knows the trust terms?”

“Family attorneys.

My father.

My mother.

Andrew.”

“And you?”

Ryan almost laughed.

“Apparently everyone except me.”

That afternoon, police obtained a warrant for Evelyn’s private office.

They found records of trust valuations.

Draft guardianship arrangements.

Emails between Evelyn and Crowe.

And one message that changed everything.

Make the mother look dangerous first.

Ryan read it three times.

The sender was Evelyn.

Crowe replied:

And Ryan?

Evelyn’s answer:

He will break when she does.

Ryan lowered the page.

Maya stood beside him.

“She planned to destroy both of us.”

“Yes.”

Detective Morris entered.

“We have enough to request additional charges.”

Ryan exhaled.

“Good.”

“But we have a problem.”

“What?”

“Evelyn is gone.”

Ryan stared at her.

“What do you mean gone?”

“She was released pending formal charging because of her age, lack of prior record, and the initial scope of the case.”

“You let her leave?”

“She surrendered her passport.”

“She doesn’t need a passport to hurt my family.”

Morris’s expression hardened.

“We’re looking for her now.”

Ryan’s phone rang.

The hospital.

He answered.

“Mr. Whitmore?”

“Yes.”

“This is Nurse Campbell from pediatrics.”

Ryan’s stomach dropped.

“What happened?”

“Your wife stepped downstairs about twenty minutes ago.”

Ryan looked at Maya.

She was standing beside him.

“That’s impossible.”

The nurse continued.

“Someone identifying herself as Oliver’s grandmother came to the floor.”

Ryan’s blood turned cold.

“Where is my son?”

Silence.

Then the nurse whispered.

“We can’t find him.”

Ryan stopped breathing.

May you like

Maya’s phone slipped from her hand.

Ryan was already running for the door.
