Chapter 11 - THE BRIDGE

The signal was traced to a road near the state border.
Evelyn was moving.
Police helicopters joined the search.
A traffic camera caught her SUV heading toward the old Whitmore suspension bridge.
Ryan knew the road.
Beyond the bridge was a private airstrip once used by his grandfather.
“She’s trying to fly out.”
The FBI agent shook his head.
“No aircraft filed.”
“She won’t file one.”
Another camera caught the SUV.
Then stopped.
Morris’s radio crackled.
“Vehicle located.”
Ryan stood.
“Where?”
“Bridge access road.”
They raced north.
Rain hammered the windshield.
Lightning cut across the sky.
By the time they arrived, police vehicles blocked both ends of the bridge.
Evelyn’s SUV sat in the center.
Oliver was inside.
Ryan could see his small face through the rear window.
Evelyn stood outside the driver’s door holding the inhaler.
“Stay back!”
Ryan ignored the officers.
“Mom!”
Evelyn turned.
Her hair was soaked.
Her gray coat hung heavy with rain.
For once she looked human.
Small.
Old.
Terrified.
“You ruined everything,” she shouted.
Ryan stepped onto the bridge.
“No.
You did.”
“I built this family!”
“You controlled it.”
“I protected you!”
“You terrorized everyone who stopped obeying you.”
Evelyn’s face twisted.
“Maya poisoned you against me.”
Maya stepped beside Ryan.
“No.
I just survived you long enough for him to see you.”
Evelyn raised the inhaler.
Ryan’s stomach dropped.
“Give that to Oliver.”
“Sign the real declaration.”
“Mom.”
“Say she is unstable.”
Ryan took another step.
“Give my son his medicine.”
“Say it!”
Oliver began coughing inside the SUV.
Maya sobbed.
“Please.”
Evelyn looked through the window.
Her hand shook.
Ryan spoke softly.
“Mom.
If you ever loved me, prove it now.”
She looked at him.
Ryan continued.
“Not the company.
Not the name.
Not the trust.
Me.”
Her face cracked.
For one second, Ryan saw something that looked like grief.
Then she opened the back door.
Maya moved.
Police shouted.
Evelyn raised her hand.
“Stop!”
Oliver reached toward her.
“Grandma.”
Evelyn looked down.
His lips were turning pale.
Something inside her finally broke.
She placed the inhaler against his mouth.
One dose.
Then another.
Oliver inhaled weakly.
Maya collapsed against Ryan with relief.
Officers moved forward.
Evelyn didn’t run.
She stood beside the SUV while they handcuffed her.
As Detective Morris led her away, Evelyn looked back at Ryan.
“You’ll understand one day.”
Ryan shook his head.
“No.
That’s the one thing I finally understand.”
Then Oliver whispered from the car.
“Daddy?”
Ryan ran to him.
May you like
But the story was not over.
Because Evelyn had one final weapon left.
