Chapter 13 - WHAT CHARLES KNEW

Charles’s younger voice came through the recorder.

“You can’t keep doing this.”

Evelyn replied calmly.

“Then stop me.”

Ryan stared at his father.

Charles sat across the room with tears in his eyes.

“You knew,” Ryan whispered.

Charles nodded.

“How much?”

“Too much.”

Ryan stood.

“You watched her destroy Rebecca.”

“Yes.”

“You watched her target Maya.”

“I didn’t know about Maya until recently.”

“But you knew what she was capable of.”

Charles closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Ryan’s voice rose.

“And you said nothing.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was Maya!”

“I know.”

“So was Rebecca!”

“I know.”

“So was I, Dad!”

Charles looked at him.

Ryan’s anger cracked.

“I spent my entire childhood trying not to upset her.

I thought that was normal.”

Charles began to cry.

“I failed you.”

Ryan wanted to scream.

Instead he sat down.

For the first time, he saw his father clearly.

Not as a coward.

Not as a victim.

As both.

Maya spoke gently.

“Charles, if you want to help now, testify.”

He looked at her.

“Against Evelyn?”

“Yes.”

“She’ll hate me.”

Maya’s expression hardened.

“She kidnapped your grandson.”

Charles lowered his head.

The next morning, he agreed to cooperate.

His testimony connected decades of manipulation.

Rebecca provided records.

Crowe gave police access to encrypted files.

Andrew admitted he knowingly approved payments to Crowe but denied knowing Evelyn would endanger Oliver.

Prosecutors offered him a deal for cooperation.

Ryan refused to speak to him.

The case grew.

But Evelyn never apologized.

During a pretrial hearing, she turned toward Ryan.

“You’re destroying the family.”

Ryan stared at her.

“No.

I’m ending what you made this family become.”

Her eyes moved toward Maya.

“You think she’ll stay with you after this?”

Maya almost laughed.

Evelyn continued.

“Everyone leaves eventually.”

Ryan leaned forward.

“You made them leave.”

For the first time, Evelyn had no answer.

Then her attorney stood.

“We have new evidence regarding Mrs. Whitmore’s mental health.”

Ryan frowned.

The defense planned to argue diminished responsibility.

Maya whispered.

“She’s going to pretend she’s unstable?”

Ryan stared at his mother.

The woman who had spent years using mental illness as a weapon against other people was now preparing to hide behind it herself.

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

Maya looked at him.

“What?”

“She doesn’t get to rewrite the story again.”

May you like

Ryan stood.

“And this time, she doesn’t control who speaks first.”
