Chapter 3 - WHAT THE CAMERA SAW

Oliver was stabilized just after midnight.
His oxygen levels slowly improved.
The doctor told Ryan that another fifteen or twenty minutes without proper treatment could have led to a far more serious emergency.
Ryan sat beside Oliver’s hospital bed and stared at his sleeping son.
Fifteen minutes.
That number refused to leave his head.
Maya sat across from him with an ice pack against her swollen nose.
Ryan finally whispered.
“I should have listened to you.”
Maya looked at him.
“When?”
“All those times you said my mother scared you.”
She was quiet.
Ryan lowered his head.
“I kept defending her.”
“You kept saying she loved Oliver.”
“She does.”
Maya’s expression sharpened.
“No, Ryan.
She loves controlling Oliver.”
The words hurt because he had no argument.
At 1:17 a.m., Detective Lena Morris entered the hospital room.
“We recovered footage from the nursery camera.”
Ryan stood.
“Can we see it?”
Morris hesitated.
“It may be difficult.”
Maya’s hands tightened.
“I want to see.”
The three of them moved into a consultation room.
The detective placed a tablet on the table.
The recording began.
Evelyn entered the nursery at 7:42 p.m.
Maya was already there, holding Oliver.
He was coughing.
Maya reached for the inhaler.
Evelyn blocked her.
Ryan felt his jaw tighten.
On-screen, Maya said, “Move.”
Evelyn replied, “Not until you sign.”
She placed a stack of papers on the changing table.
Maya stared at them.
“What are these?”
“Your agreement.”
“I’m not signing anything.”
Evelyn picked up Oliver’s inhaler.
Maya froze.
“Give that back.”
“Sign first.”
Ryan stopped breathing.
Maya stood.
“He needs that.”
“He needs stability.”
“He needs his inhaler!”
Maya reached for it.
Evelyn slapped her.
Hard.
Maya stumbled into the dresser.
Ryan’s hands curled into fists.
The video continued.
Maya lunged forward.
Evelyn shoved her.
The lamp crashed.
Oliver screamed.
Then Evelyn looked directly at the camera.
For one horrifying moment, Ryan thought she had forgotten it was there.
She hadn’t.
Evelyn walked toward it.
The screen went black.
Detective Morris paused the video.
Ryan stared at the blank image.
“She knew the camera was there.”
“Yes.”
“She installed it.”
“That’s what it appears.”
Maya whispered.
“She was building evidence.”
The detective nodded.
“Possibly.”
Ryan looked at the timestamp.
The video stopped at 7:49.
He had entered the nursery at 8:03.
Fourteen missing minutes.
“What happened after she shut it off?”
Maya’s face drained of color.
Ryan turned to her.
“Maya?”
She looked at him.
“She locked the door.”
His stomach tightened.
“She what?”
“She locked us in.”
Maya’s voice broke.
“Then she stood in front of me holding Oliver’s inhaler and told me exactly what was going to happen.”
Ryan felt cold.
“What did she say?”
Maya swallowed.
“She said when the police came, she would tell them I attacked her.
She said they would take Oliver.
And she said you would help her do it.”
Ryan shut his eyes.
Then Detective Morris’s phone buzzed.
She read the message.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
Ryan asked.
She looked at both of them.
“We found the inhaler.”
“Where?”
Morris hesitated.
May you like
“In Evelyn Whitmore’s car.”
And that wasn’t all they found.
