Chapter 2 - THE FOLDER

The officer crouched beside the nursery wardrobe.

Hidden beneath a false wooden panel was a locked drawer.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“That is private property.”

The officer looked at her.

“Ma’am, step back.”

Ryan’s eyes never left her face.

“Mother.

What’s in there?”

“Nothing that concerns you.”

Ryan almost laughed.

His wife was bleeding.

His son was being carried downstairs on oxygen.

And somehow Evelyn still believed she controlled what concerned him.

The officer forced the drawer open.

Inside was a thick cream-colored folder.

He placed it on the changing table.

The first page made Ryan’s blood run cold.

PETITION FOR EMERGENCY TEMPORARY CUSTODY.

The child listed was Oliver Whitmore.

The mother listed was Maya Whitmore.

Ryan flipped to the next page.

Psychological instability.

Violent outbursts.

Medication misuse.

Neglect.

Threats against a minor.

Ryan stopped reading.

“What the hell is this?”

Evelyn remained silent.

Maya came closer.

Her face turned white.

“I’ve never seen those papers.”

Ryan turned another page.

There were statements supposedly describing Maya screaming at Oliver.

Another accused her of leaving him alone during a medical emergency.

Another claimed Maya abused prescription medication.

Then Ryan saw his own name.

A drafted statement had been prepared for him too.

He read the first line.

“My wife’s mental condition has caused me increasing concern for the safety of our son.”

Ryan looked up.

“You wrote a statement for me?”

Evelyn finally spoke.

“I was protecting Oliver.”

“By forging words in my name?”

“I didn’t forge anything.

It was a draft.”

“A draft you expected me to sign?”

“You would have understood eventually.”

Ryan slammed the page onto the table.

“No.

I’m understanding right now.”

Maya whispered.

“She told me nobody would believe me.”

Ryan looked at her.

“When?”

“Tonight.

When I refused to sign.”

Her eyes filled again.

“She said you always believe her.”

That hurt because it was true.

For years, Ryan had called Evelyn “difficult.”

Controlling.

Overprotective.

He had explained away the way she insulted Maya.

The way she questioned Maya’s parenting.

The way she arrived without calling.

The way she criticized everything from Oliver’s food to Maya’s clothes.

Ryan had always said the same thing.

That’s just Mom.

Tonight, those words made him sick.

The paramedic appeared at the nursery door.

“We’re taking your son to St. Matthew’s.”

Ryan immediately moved.

“I’m coming.”

Maya followed.

Evelyn stepped toward the hallway.

“I should go too.”

Ryan stopped her with one look.

“No.”

“Ryan—”

“You’re not coming near him.”

Her face hardened.

“I am his grandmother.”

“And right now, you’re part of a police investigation.”

Evelyn stared at him.

Then her eyes moved toward Maya.

Something passed across her expression.

Not fear.

Hatred.

“You have no idea what she has done to this family.”

Maya flinched.

Ryan stepped closer to his mother.

“No.

I think I’m finally starting to understand what you’ve done.”

He turned away.

As he reached the stairs, the officer called after him.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

Ryan looked back.

The officer held up the tiny camera.

“If this was recording tonight, we may have the entire incident.”

Ryan’s heart pounded.

Evelyn’s face changed again.

Only for a second.

But Ryan saw it.

May you like

The camera terrified her.

Which meant whatever happened in that room was worse than anything Maya had told him.
