Chapter 12 - THE RECORDING

Evelyn was charged with kidnapping, child endangerment, assault, evidence tampering, forgery-related offenses, and other counts.

Andrew hired an attorney.

Crowe began cooperating with investigators.

Ryan believed the worst was over.

Then Evelyn’s lawyer released an audio recording.

It contained Ryan screaming at his mother.

“I wish you were dead.”

The recording was real.

Ryan remembered saying it.

Six months earlier.

During an argument after Evelyn insulted Maya at Oliver’s birthday party.

The recording spread online.

Headlines changed.

Whitmore Family War.

CEO Threatened His Mother Months Before Kidnapping.

The board called an emergency meeting.

Ryan entered the conference room knowing exactly what was coming.

The chairman pro tempore cleared his throat.

“Ryan, until the investigation concludes, we believe you should temporarily step aside.”

Ryan looked around the table.

Years of work.

Years of loyalty.

Gone in twenty seconds.

He smiled faintly.

“Fine.”

Several board members looked surprised.

“You’re not going to fight?”

“No.”

Ryan stood.

“My son almost died because my family cared more about control than people.

I’m not becoming one more person who sacrifices everything to sit in this chair.”

He placed his badge on the table.

“Find another CEO.”

Outside, Maya waited.

“What happened?”

“I resigned.”

Her eyes widened.

“Ryan…”

“I’m done.”

She hugged him.

For the first time in days, Ryan breathed normally.

Then Detective Morris called.

“We found Rebecca.”

Ryan froze.

His missing aunt.

“Where?”

“Oregon.”

“Is she willing to talk?”

A pause.

“She says she has evidence your mother has been doing this for more than twenty years.”

Ryan looked at Maya.

“What kind of evidence?”

“Recordings.

Documents.

Letters.”

Morris lowered her voice.

“And she says Evelyn once admitted exactly why she targets people.”

Ryan’s pulse quickened.

“Why?”

“According to Rebecca, your mother believes anyone who threatens the family’s reputation has to be removed before they can damage it.”

Ryan remembered Maya.

His father.

Rebecca.

Even Andrew.

All of them had been pieces on Evelyn’s board.

Ryan asked, “Will Rebecca testify?”

“Yes.”

Then Morris added, “But she wants to speak to you first.”

Two days later, Ryan sat across from a woman he had not seen since childhood.

Rebecca looked at him and cried.

“You have her eyes.”

Ryan almost smiled.

“So I’ve been told.”

Rebecca reached across the table.

“I’m sorry I disappeared.”

Ryan shook his head.

“You survived.”

She nodded.

Then she slid an old cassette recorder toward him.

“Your mother recorded everything.”

Ryan stared at it.

Rebecca pressed play.

Evelyn’s younger voice filled the room.

“People believe whatever story reaches them first.”

Ryan felt cold.

Then the recording continued.

“And once they believe you’re unstable, nothing you say matters.”

Maya reached for Ryan’s hand.

Rebecca whispered.

“That was her favorite trick.”

But the next voice on the tape shocked Ryan even more.

It belonged to his father.
