Chapter 9 - The Truth Hidden Behind Their Perfect Marriage

The answer came three days later.

James called me early in the morning.

“Robert.”

His voice sounded serious.

“We found something.”

I sat up immediately.

“What?”

“Something about Cassandra.”

I walked to my office.

“What did you find?”

“She wasn’t just interested in Michael.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

James opened a file.

“Before the wedding, Cassandra had been researching your family assets.”

I felt a cold feeling in my chest.

“Researching?”

“Yes.”

“Trust documents.”

“Property ownership.”

“Business structure.”

I said nothing.

James continued.

“She knew exactly what she wanted.”

I looked at the documents.

Then I saw something that made my hands go still.

A conversation between Cassandra and someone else.

Before the wedding.

Before she became part of our family.

The messages were clear.

She wasn’t asking how to build a relationship.

She was asking how to gain access.

Michael was not just in love.

He was being influenced.

But that did not excuse him.

A person can be manipulated.

But they still choose their actions.

I spent years believing Cassandra was the problem.

But the truth was more complicated.

Michael allowed it.

He wanted the same things.

The status.

The money.

The lifestyle.

That evening, I called Michael.

He answered quickly.

“Dad?”

His voice sounded nervous.

“We need to talk.”

A pause.

“About what?”

“Cassandra.”

Silence.

That silence told me everything.

“You know something.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Don’t lie to me.”

His breathing changed.

“Dad…”

“Did you know she was investigating our assets before the wedding?”

No answer.

“Michael.”

Finally, he spoke.

“She was just trying to understand our family.”

I closed my eyes.

“Our family?”

“Yes.”

“She was trying to understand what she could get.”

“That’s not fair.”

“No?”

“No.”

His voice became defensive.

“You don’t know her.”

I looked out the window.

“I know enough.”

Michael became quiet.

Then he said something I never expected.

“She made me feel important.”

Those words stopped me.

“What?”

“She believed in me.”

I shook my head.

“Your mother believed in you before anyone.”

“That’s different.”

“Why?”

“Because Mom always saw me as her little boy.”

I felt pain hearing that.

Because maybe he was right.

Maybe Ellen loved him so much that she never allowed herself to see who he was becoming.

But I had to say it.

“Your mother saw the best in you.”

“And you chose the worst version of yourself.”

Silence.

Then Michael whispered.

“I can fix this.”

I looked at the flash drive sitting on my desk.

“No.”

“Dad…”

“You can’t fix what you refuse to admit.”

After I ended the call, I sat alone.

Because a terrible thought entered my mind.

Maybe losing money wasn’t enough.

Maybe losing privileges wasn’t enough.

Maybe Michael needed to lose something much harder.

The illusion that he was the victim.

The next morning, I received an email.

From Michael’s lawyer.

The subject line made my heart stop.

Legal Notice Regarding Family Assets.

My son was not apologizing.

He was fighting back.
