Chapter 10 - When My Son Turned Against Me

The email arrived at 7:03 in the morning.
I knew something was wrong before I opened it.
Because people who are sorry ask for forgiveness.
People who are afraid ask for another chance.
But people who feel entitled…
They send lawyers.
I opened the message.
The first sentence made my jaw tighten.
“Notice of legal action regarding disputed family assets.”
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
My own son was challenging me.
Not because he was innocent.
Not because he wanted to repair what he had broken.
Because he believed he was losing something that belonged to him.
I called James immediately.
“Did you see the email?”
“Yes.”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“What does it mean?”
“It means Michael is choosing a fight.”
I looked out the window.
“A fight against his own father.”
James didn’t answer.
Because there was nothing to say.
That was exactly what was happening.
Later that afternoon, Michael called.
I almost didn’t answer.
But I did.
“Dad.”
His voice sounded different.
Controlled.
Careful.
Like he had practiced what he wanted to say.
“Michael.”
“We need to talk.”
“You sent lawyers.”
A pause.
“I had to protect myself.”
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“Protect yourself?”
“Yes.”
“From what?”
“From losing everything.”
I closed my eyes.
There it was again.
Everything was about him.
Not Ellen.
Not what happened.
Not the pain he caused.
Him.
“Michael, your mother came home injured.”
“I know.”
“And you are worried about money?”
“That’s not fair.”
“No.”
My voice became colder.
“What’s not fair is you acting like the victim.”
He became quiet.
Then he whispered.
“I didn’t think you would actually do this.”
“Do what?”
“Cut me off.”
I stared at the wall.
“Michael.”
“Yes?”
“I didn’t cut you off.”
“You did.”
“No.”
I spoke slowly.
“You cut yourself off when you decided protecting your image mattered more than protecting your mother.”
There was silence.
Then he said something that shocked me.
“Cassandra said Mom always hated her.”
I froze.
“What?”
“She said Mom judged her from the beginning.”
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“Michael.”
“What?”
“Your mother defended Cassandra.”
“She wanted this marriage to work.”
“She welcomed her.”
“She treated her like a daughter.”
He didn’t answer.
Because somewhere inside, he knew.
But admitting the truth meant admitting everything else.
That night, Ellen found me sitting alone in my office.
“You’re hurting.”
I looked up.
She smiled sadly.
“I know you.”
I sighed.
“He’s fighting us.”
She closed her eyes.
“I never thought my son would do this.”
I walked over and held her.
For the first time since the wedding…
She cried.
Not because of the bruises.
Not because of the humiliation.
Because the person who hurt her was the person she loved most.
The next morning, James arrived with more information.
And this time…
It wasn’t about money.
It was about betrayal.
“Robert.”
“What happened?”
He placed a folder on the table.
“We found evidence that Michael used company resources for personal plans.”
I opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Emails.
Payments.
And one detail that made my blood run cold.
Michael had been preparing for this.
For months.
Before the wedding.
Before the fight.
Before everything happened.
He wasn’t reacting.
He was planning.
And suddenly I understood.
May you like
The wedding was not the beginning of the betrayal.
It was only the moment they got careless.
