Chapter 6 - The Trap They Built for Themselves

I spent the next week saying nothing.

That was the hardest part.

Because every instinct inside me wanted to confront Michael.

I wanted to ask him how he could hurt his own mother.

I wanted to ask Cassandra how she could smile beside Ellen after attacking her.

But anger makes people careless.

And I needed them to reveal everything.

So I stayed quiet.

I acted normal.

And they believed they were winning.

Michael started calling more often.

Not to apologize.

To check on money.

“Dad, have you thought about the wedding gift?”

“Not yet.”

“We need to finalize the house purchase.”

“We?”

“Yes.”

I looked at the documents in front of me.

The house.

The trust.

The money.

Everything connected.

“I’ll let you know.”

He sounded frustrated.

“You’re really going to make this difficult?”

I almost laughed.

Difficult?

He had no idea what difficult meant.

Meanwhile, Cassandra started changing her approach.

She sent Ellen flowers.

A handwritten note.

A fake apology.

“I hope we can move past this.”

Ellen looked at the card.

“What should I do?”

I watched her.

“Do you believe her?”

Ellen didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“She hurt you.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you still defending her?”

Ellen looked down.

“Because I don’t want to lose our son.”

My heart broke.

Because that was the difference between us.

Ellen was trying to save the family.

I was trying to stop them from destroying it.

That night, Michael came to our house.

But this time…

He wasn’t alone.

Cassandra was with him.

They walked inside confidently.

Almost like they owned the place.

Michael looked around.

“Dad, we need to talk.”

I nodded.

“Sit down.”

They sat across from me.

Cassandra crossed her legs.

“We think this situation has gone too far.”

I looked at her.

“You think?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“We are family.”

I stared at her.

“Family doesn’t hurt family.”

Her smile disappeared.

Michael leaned forward.

“Dad, Mom made a mistake by hiding what happened.”

I looked at Ellen.

Then back at him.

“She was protecting you.”

“No.”

His answer came immediately.

“She was creating drama.”

The room went silent.

Ellen looked like she had been slapped again.

But this time…

By words.

I stood up.

“Leave.”

Michael blinked.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“Dad—”

“Leave my house.”

For the first time, he looked shocked.

Because he finally understood.

The door he always believed would stay open…

Was closing.

Cassandra stood.

“This is ridiculous.”

“No.”

I looked at her.

“This is consequences.”

Michael stared at me.

“You’re really doing this?”

“Yes.”

“Over one mistake?”

I laughed quietly.

“One mistake?”

I looked directly at him.

“You didn’t make one mistake.”

“You made a choice.”

“A choice to hurt your mother.”

“A choice to protect your wife instead of her.”

“A choice to walk away.”

Michael’s face changed.

But before he could respond…

His phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Then his expression changed.

“What happened?”

I watched him answer.

“Hello?”

A few seconds passed.

Then his face went pale.

“What do you mean access was denied?”

I knew immediately.

The company.

The first step was happening.

Michael looked at me.

“Dad…”

I didn’t move.

“What did you do?”

I answered calmly.

“What I should have done a long time ago.”

The call ended.

Michael stared at me.

And for the first time…

My son looked afraid.

Because he finally realized something.

May you like

The man he had spent his whole life depending on…

Was no longer protecting him from the consequences of his own choices.
