Chapter 11 - The Daughter-In-Law Who Wanted Everything

Cassandra always knew how to look innocent.
That was her talent.
She could smile while causing damage.
She could apologize while blaming everyone else.
And for a long time…
I underestimated her.
That changed when she came to my office alone.
No Michael.
No lawyer.
Just Cassandra.
She walked in wearing a simple dress.
A carefully chosen expression.
“Robert.”
I didn’t offer her a seat.
“What do you want?”
She looked hurt.
“I wanted to talk.”
“About what?”
“About fixing our family.”
I studied her face.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“You didn’t come here after the wedding.”
“You didn’t come when Ellen was injured.”
“You came when the money disappeared.”
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
“You think I’m a bad person.”
“I think your actions explain who you are.”
She sighed.
“I made mistakes.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You made choices.”
She looked away.
“Michael loves me.”
“I believe that.”
“Then why are you doing this?”
“Because love does not excuse cruelty.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“You’re really willing to destroy your son’s future?”
I answered immediately.
“I’m trying to stop him from destroying his own.”
She stood up.
“You don’t understand.”
“Understand what?”
“Michael was tired.”
“Tired?”
“Yes.”
“He felt like he was never enough.”
I stared at her.
“And your solution was to turn him against his mother?”
“No.”
“Then what was it?”
She said nothing.
Because there was no answer.
Before leaving, Cassandra stopped at the door.
“You should be careful.”
I looked at her.
“Is that a threat?”
She smiled.
“No.”
“It’s advice.”
Then she left.
But after she walked out…
I received a message.
From an unknown number.
A photograph was attached.
It was Michael and Cassandra at a restaurant.
Taken months before the wedding.
That wasn’t strange.
Until I looked closer.
Sitting across from them was a financial advisor.
The same advisor who handled several family trusts.
I immediately called James.
“Find out who arranged this meeting.”
An hour later, he called back.
“Robert.”
“Yes?”
“You’re not going to like this.”
“Tell me.”
“The meeting was arranged by Michael.”
My stomach dropped.
“Why?”
James hesitated.
“He was asking questions about transferring assets after marriage.”
I sat back.
The betrayal was deeper than I imagined.
Michael wasn’t just influenced by Cassandra.
He was actively building the plan with her.
That night, I went into Ellen’s room.
She was reading an old letter Michael wrote when he was ten years old.
She looked up.
“What’s wrong?”
I wanted to tell her everything.
But I couldn’t.
Not yet.
Because she had already lost enough.
Instead, I sat beside her.
And I held her hand.
The next morning…
Michael released a public statement.
A statement about his “controlling father.”
About “family pressure.”
About “being forced away from his rightful future.”
And then he made one final accusation.
He claimed Ellen had lied about the wedding incident.
The woman he hurt…
Was now being blamed.

That was the moment I knew.
There would be no easy way back.
