Chapter 5 - The Secret Michael Never Expected Me to Find

Three days after the wedding, Michael came to my office.
He walked in like nothing had happened.
That bothered me more than anger would have.
He wore an expensive suit.
A confident smile.
The same smile he used when he wanted something.
“Dad.”
I didn’t stand.
“Michael.”
He looked around.
“You’re really upset.”
I looked at him.
“Am I supposed to be happy?”
He sighed.
“I knew Mom would make this bigger than it was.”
My hands tightened.
“Be careful.”
“With what?”
“With how you speak about your mother.”
Michael rolled his eyes.
There it was.
The disrespect.
The thing I had ignored for too long.
“I came here because I think we need to fix this.”
I leaned back.
“Fix what?”
“Our relationship.”
I almost smiled.
“Our relationship?”
“Yes.”
“You mean your inheritance?”
His face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
“You’re being unfair.”
“No.”
I looked directly at him.
“I’m finally being honest.”
Michael walked closer.
“Dad, everything I have built is because I worked hard.”
I nodded.
“You worked hard.”
“Yes.”
“But you also had help.”
He looked away.
“Everyone has help.”
“Exactly.”
I stood up.
“But not everyone forgets who helped them.”
He became angry.
“You’re choosing Mom over me?”
I stared at him.
“No.”
“I’m choosing the truth.”
Michael shook his head.
“I can’t believe you’re doing this.”
I answered quietly.
“I can’t believe you did what you did.”
For the first time…
He looked uncomfortable.
But then his expression hardened.
“You’re making a mistake.”
“No.”
“You are.”
He stepped closer.
“You need me.”
I stared at him.
“Excuse me?”
“You need me to continue the company.”
I almost laughed.
Because that was the problem.
Michael truly believed I needed him.
Not the other way around.
“Michael.”
“Yes?”
“The company existed before you.”
He froze.
“And it will exist after you.”
The silence was heavy.
Then he left.
But before closing the door…
He turned around.
“You’ll regret this.”
I watched him walk away.
Those words sounded familiar.
Exactly like Cassandra.
That night, I called James.
“I want a deeper review.”
“Of what?”
“Everything.”
“Michael’s accounts?”
“Yes.”
“His business?”
“Yes.”
“His personal agreements?”
“Yes.”
I paused.
“Find out what I don’t know.”
Two days later, James called.
His voice was different.
Serious.
“Robert.”
“What did you find?”
“There’s something you need to see.”
I sat down.
“What is it?”
“Michael wasn’t just hiding his behavior.”
“He was hiding money.”
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of money?”
“Transfers.”
“How much?”
James paused.
“Enough that you need to come in person.”
I arrived at his office the next morning.
He placed documents in front of me.
Bank records.
Emails.
Private agreements.
And then I saw the name.
Cassandra.
My son’s wife.
They weren’t just planning their future.
They were planning how to secure it.
Using everything I had built.
James pointed at one document.
“This was scheduled after the wedding.”
I looked closer.
A transfer request.
A request connected to my family trust.
The date was three weeks away.
I stared at the paper.
Michael and Cassandra weren’t waiting for forgiveness.
They were waiting for access.
And suddenly…
I understood.
The wedding wasn’t just a celebration.
It was the moment they believed they had won.
May you like
But they had made one mistake.
They forgot I was still watching.
