Chapter 8: The Price of Betrayal

Chapter 8: The Price of Betrayal
I listened to the recording three times.
Each time, Karinaâs young voice cut deeper.
She had known from the beginning.
Not suspected.
Not discovered later.
Known.
When we returned to Mexico City, she was still at the police station under protective supervision. Marisol had not arrested her because she was cooperating, and because there was still no direct evidence tying her to the poisoning.
I entered the interview room alone.
Karina looked exhausted.
âI heard the recording,â I said.
Her face collapsed.
âDanielââ
âYou were told to make me love you.â
âI was twenty-three.â
âYou were old enough to know what you were doing.â
âMy father controlled everything. My money. My education. Where I lived.â
âAnd me?â
She began crying quietly.
âAt first, you were an assignment.â
I stared at her without speaking.
âBut after I knew you, everything changed.â
âThen why didnât you tell me?â
âBecause every year I waited made the truth uglier.â
âThat didnât stop you from helping your father access my motherâs accounts.â
âI thought he only wanted to pressure her into selling.â
âYou watched her become confused.â
âI challenged him.â
âWhen?â
Her silence answered.
I placed our wedding ring on the table.
Karina stared at it.
âI did love you,â she whispered.
âMaybe you did.â
Her eyes rose with fragile hope.
âBut love without truth is just another form of manipulation.â
I turned to leave.
âDaniel, wait.â
She gripped the edge of the table.
âMy father is planning something tomorrow.â
I stopped.
âWhat?â
âThe city development board is holding an emergency vote. If your mother is declared incapacitated and the property is classified as abandoned commercial land, Mendoza Urban Development can begin an expropriation process.â
âThey canât do that without the deed.â
âThey donât need the original deed if they destroy the chain of inheritance.â
âHow?â
May you like
Karina looked terrified.
âBy proving you arenât Rodrigo Ruizâs biological son.â
