Chapter 15: The Heir Behind the Empire

Chapter 15: The Heir Behind the Empire

Marisol treated the message as a credible threat.

The house had been searched, but nothing valuable was taken.

Whoever entered had wanted to frighten us.

Karina recognized the handwriting from photographs of old company documents.

It belonged to her uncle, Santiago Mendoza.

Jorge’s younger brother had remained invisible throughout the investigation. Public records described him as a silent investor living in Spain.

In reality, he controlled several shell companies that had funded the men who followed me, the false medical assessments used against my mother, and the attempted destruction of the storage facility.

“He was always more dangerous than my father,” Karina said.

“Why didn’t you mention him before?”

“Because I thought he was dead.”

Three years earlier, Santiago had staged a boating accident and disappeared.

Marisol traced one of the shell companies to a private airfield outside Toluca.

By the time police arrived, a jet was preparing to leave.

Santiago was arrested on the runway.

Inside his luggage, officers found forged passports, cash, and a file containing photographs of my family taken over the previous nine years.

One photograph showed my wedding day.

Another showed my mother entering her doctor’s office.

The final photograph had been taken just two weeks earlier.

It showed me standing beside the storage unit.

Santiago had been watching from the beginning.

During interrogation, he admitted that Jorge had handled the marriage strategy while he supervised surveillance and intimidation.

He also revealed the full plan.

Once my mother was declared incompetent, Karina was expected to persuade me to place the property into a joint marital trust. Jorge would then force a divorce and use Karina’s legal share to seize control.

If I resisted, Santiago had prepared an “accident.”

Karina listened to the confession from behind the observation glass.

“I didn’t know that part,” she said.

I believed her.

But belief was no longer enough to rebuild what we had lost.

Santiago was charged alongside the remaining conspirators.

For the first time in decades, no Mendoza remained free to pursue the land.

Yet one question still followed me.

What should I do with seventy million pesos’ worth of property soaked in my father’s blood?

Rafael gave me the answer.

“Build something they never would have.”
