Chapter 2: Someone Was Already There

Chapter 2: Someone Was Already There
Detective Marisol Fuentes told me not to move.
I should have listened.
The storage facility was almost empty, illuminated by rows of flickering security lights. I sat behind the wheel with my fatherâs documents spread across the passenger seat, trying to understand how twenty-two years of lies could fit inside one metal box.
Then I noticed the headlights.
A black SUV entered the lot without slowing.
It passed three empty rows before stopping directly across from me.
The engine remained running.
No one got out.
âDetective,â I whispered into the phone, âI think someone followed me.â
âLock your doors.â
I pressed the button.
The locks clicked just as the driverâs door of the SUV opened.
A man stepped out wearing a dark suit and black gloves. He didnât look lost. He didnât check a unit number.
He looked directly at me.
Then he started walking.
I shoved my fatherâs deed into the leather folder and started the engine. The man quickened his pace.
Before I could reverse, another figure appeared behind my car.
They had boxed me in.
The first man reached inside his jacket.
A pair of headlights suddenly flooded the lot.
An unmarked police sedan cut between us and stopped sideways. Marisol emerged with her weapon drawn.
âPolice! Hands where I can see them!â
The gloved man froze.
His partner ran.
Marisolâs colleague pursued him between the storage buildings while she ordered the first man onto the ground.
As she handcuffed him, something metallic slipped from his pocket.
A syringe.
Marisol stared at it.
Then at me.
âThat isnât a robbery tool.â
The man smiled against the pavement.
âYouâre already too late,â he said.
My blood turned cold.
âWhat does that mean?â
May you like
He lifted his head slightly.
âAsk your wife.â
