Chapter 6: My Mother’s Last Safe Place

Chapter 6: My Mother’s Last Safe Place

My mother looked smaller beneath the hospital sheets.

But her eyes were clear.

When she saw Karina standing behind the detective, anger sharpened her exhausted face.

“Get her out.”

Karina stopped at the doorway.

“Mrs. Ruiz—”

“You watched them poison me.”

Karina lowered her head and stepped into the corridor.

I sat beside my mother.

“Where is the recording?”

She looked toward Marisol.

“Can I trust her?”

“With your life,” I said.

My mother reached beneath her hospital gown and pulled out a thin silver chain.

A small religious medal hung from it.

She pressed it into my hand.

“Your father wore this every day.”

I turned it over.

The back opened.

Inside was not a recording but a tiny key.

“The box was a distraction,” she said. “Rodrigo knew the Mendozas would search for it.”

“What does this key open?”

“A safe-deposit box under another name.”

“Whose name?”

She looked at me for a long moment.

“Your father’s brother.”

I stared at her.

“My father didn’t have a brother.”

“That’s what we needed everyone to believe.”

His name was Rafael Ruiz.

After Rodrigo died, Rafael wanted to expose Hector Mendoza immediately. But my mother feared they would kill him too. Together, they hid the original recording and created false records suggesting Rafael had died abroad.

“Where is he now?” I asked.

My mother’s eyes filled with pain.

“I don’t know.”

“You haven’t spoken to him?”

“Not for eighteen years.”

Marisol leaned closer.

“Which bank?”

My mother gave her the name of a small private bank in Puebla.

Then she gripped my wrist.

“Daniel, listen carefully. The account requires two living members of the Ruiz bloodline.”

“There’s you and me.”

“No.”

Her fingers tightened.

“I used a different identity when we opened it. Legally, I cannot access it.”

“Then who is the second person?”

She looked toward the closed hospital door.

“Rafael.”

At that exact moment, Marisol’s phone rang.

She answered, listened, and turned pale.

The man arrested at the storage unit had been found unconscious in his holding cell.

Before losing consciousness, he had written two words on the wall.

RAFAEL LIVES.
