Chapter 3: The Woman in My House

Chapter 3: The Woman in My House
Karina was waiting when I returned home.
She sat at the kitchen table in a cream blouse, her hands wrapped around a cup of tea as though it were an ordinary evening.
She looked up and forced a small smile.
âWhere have you been?â
I closed the door behind me.
âAt the hospital.â
Her eyes dropped briefly to the leather folder beneath my arm.
It lasted less than a second.
But I saw it.
Recognition.
Not curiosity.
Recognition.
âHow is your mother?â she asked.
âAlive.â
Karinaâs fingers tightened around the cup.
âThatâs good.â
âIs it?â
Her expression changed.
âDaniel, whatâs that supposed to mean?â
I placed the folder on the table but kept one hand over it.
âA man followed me tonight.â
She went still.
âHe had a syringe.â
Karinaâs face drained of color.
I watched every movementâthe way her eyes shifted toward the hallway, the way she swallowed before speaking.
âYou should call the police.â
âI did.â
I sat across from her.
âHe told me to ask my wife.â
Silence.
The refrigerator hummed behind us.
Karina slowly set down her cup.
âPeople say strange things when theyâre arrested.â
âHe knew I was married.â
âThat doesnât prove anything.â
âHe knew Iâd found something.â
Her gaze returned to the folder.
This time, she couldnât hide it.
I opened the leather case just enough to expose a copy of the deed.
Karina inhaled sharply.
âYouâve seen this before,â I said.
âNo.â
âYou didnât even read it.â
âI recognized the government seal.â
âYou recognized the property.â
She stood abruptly.
âYouâre exhausted. Your mother is sick. Youâre looking for enemies because youâre scared.â
I stood as well.
âMy mother said your father knew who my father really was.â
Karina stepped backward.
For the first time in our nine-year marriage, I saw fear on her face.
Not fear for me.
Fear of me.
Her phone vibrated on the counter.
The screen lit up before she could grab it.
Jorge Mendoza.
