Chương 9 - THE PRICE OF BEING QUIET

I didn’t play the recording immediately.
I looked at Micah.
“You don’t have to gather evidence for me.”
“I wasn’t trying to.”
His eyes were wet.
“I just wanted to remember what he said.”
I held him until his shoulders loosened.
Ruth listened later.
Brett’s voice was clear.
Tell them Mom planned it.
Nobody’s mad at you.
We just need to correct the story.
Micah asked, “But that’s not true.”
Then Brett said, “Sometimes protecting your family means knowing what to keep private.”
Ruth checked the circumstances and local recording rules before deciding how to use it.
She also asked me to arrange counseling for Micah.
“He needs a place where neither parent gets to set the agenda.”
I booked the appointment.
Then I stopped waiting for Brett’s next move.
Through Ruth, I requested an inventory of my personal property and a supervised retrieval.
I asked our longtime bookkeeper, Darlene Shaw, to preserve every message concerning the Finch Family Reserve.
I gave Arthur the rider through counsel.
I wrote down every date I could verify.
No speeches.
No threats.
Dates.
Documents.
Witnesses.
Brett’s attorney responded with a revised offer.
Seven hundred fifty thousand dollars.
Confidentiality.
No admission.
I refused.
An hour later, Sierra called.
“I think we should talk woman to woman.”
“Put it in an email.”
“You’re making this worse for your son.”
“Don’t use his name.”
She changed tactics.
“Brett said you were separated.”
“Did he also say my grandmother gave you her brooch?”
Silence.
“He said it was his to give.”
“You wore it in front of me.”
“I know.”
That answer surprised me.
Then she said, “You should accept the settlement.”
“Why?”
“Because you don’t know how bad the books are.”
The line went dead.
At nine that night, Darlene sent Ruth a preserved email.
Brett had ordered the company’s cloud archive deleted.
Darlene had refused.

His reply contained a sentence that changed the whole case.
If those loan payments are traced, Audrey won’t be the only one asking questions.
