Chương 10 - THE MONEY UNDER MY NAME

Ruth arranged an emergency court application to preserve disputed assets and records.
Arthur’s acquisition stayed paused.
Darlene supplied records through the attorneys.
The Finch Family Reserve wasn’t a family account.
It belonged to a consulting company.
Vaughn Strategic Services.
Sierra’s company.
The first payment predated her official hiring by seven months.
Brett had known her long before he introduced her to me.
He had routed company money through payments supposedly owed to Grandma.
Money connected to my inheritance.
Money he had kept me from seeing.
“Why use her name?” I asked.
“Because the debt already existed,” Ruth said.
“Payments looked ordinary on the ledger.”
The accountant examining the records found a second pattern.
Management fees.
Duplicated invoices.
A property deposit charged as restaurant development.
The property was a downtown condo.
Brett and Sierra had been living there part-time.
I thought of the nights he claimed a freezer had failed.
The mornings he came home smelling of hotel soap.
I had believed the emergencies because I was always the person who fixed them.
Ruth turned her laptop toward me.
There was a draft acquisition distribution schedule.
Brett’s payout.
Sierra’s consulting bonus.
My name appeared once.
Estimated marital settlement.
Two hundred fifty thousand.
They had already decided my price.
“Can the restaurants survive this?” I asked.
“That depends on how much is recoverable.”
I called Arthur.
“What happens to our employees?”
“If the records are corrected and the business is sound, there may still be a transaction.”
“I won’t approve a deal that guts the staff.”
“You’ll need a real seat at the table first.”
“I’m working on it.”
That afternoon, the document examiner called.
The signature on the transfer was not original ink.
It was a reproduced image.
Taken from another document.
Ruth asked which one.
The examiner described the spacing and a tiny break in the final letter.
I knew that signature.
It came from an authorization I had signed after my urgent-care visit.

Brett had kept the paper.
Then he had used the night I needed help to build the document that erased me.
