Chương 5 - THE PLAN FOR MY EXIT

Ruth enlarged the video until the letters blurred.

“We need the original recording.”

“I’ll ask her.”

“And the hotel’s production records.”

She wrote both requests down.

I watched the frozen image.

My name.

The word exit.

Final.

“What was he planning?”

“We’ll find out.”

That afternoon, Brett called.

I answered on speaker with Ruth beside me.

“You’ve had your little performance,” he said.

“Now we need to calm this down.”

“Was there a presentation about removing me?”

A pause.

“There was a transition announcement.”

“What transition?”

“You wanted less responsibility.”

“I wanted one weekend off in August.”

“You’ve been unhappy for years.”

“With you arriving home after midnight and calling it networking?”

Ruth lifted a hand.

I stopped.

Brett exhaled.

“I can offer you a generous settlement.”

“For my marriage or my company?”

“For everyone’s sake.”

“How much?”

“Two hundred fifty thousand. The house until Micah finishes school. Confidentiality.”

“And my shares?”

“You transferred those.”

Ruth leaned toward the phone.

“This is Ruth Calder, representing Audrey.”

The silence sharpened.

“All further proposals come through me.”

Brett hung up.

An hour later, the hotel sent the archived presentation to Ruth’s office.

The file had been supplied by Sierra’s company account.

Most of it was ordinary.

Growth projections.

Photographs.

A new logo.

Then came a slide showing Brett and Sierra outside our newest restaurant.

The heading read:

A NEW CHAPTER.

The notes beneath it were worse.

Brett announces Audrey’s retirement.

Emphasize health, family priorities, and creative differences.

Avoid ownership questions.

The final hidden slide listed an acquisition closing date.

Friday.

Four days away.

“They were going to tell everyone I’d retired,” I said.

“Yes.”

“And I would have been sitting right there.”

Ruth didn’t soften it.

“That would have helped make the story credible.”

My phone rang.

Arthur Bell.

“I’ve paused the transaction,” he said.

“I need to meet with you.”

“Why?”

“Because I reviewed the first restaurant’s funding documents.”

I sat straighter.

“What did you find?”

“A secured loan from Opal Finch.”

“Grandma said it was a gift.”

“Then somebody changed how it was recorded.”

May you like

He paused.

“And the company still lists an unpaid balance.”
