Chương 8 - THE PERSON I TRUSTED

Ruth told me not to answer the unknown number.

She saved the message.

Then she called a forensic document examiner.

My anger wanted speed.

Evidence required patience.

By Thursday morning, Brett had filed an emergency request in family court.

He claimed I was involving Micah in adult disputes and threatening the stability of his home.

He attached a statement describing me as “emotionally volatile.”

The witness was Lena Ortiz.

I read her name three times.

She arrived at Ruth’s office twenty minutes later.

“I didn’t know he’d use it like that.”

“You signed it?”

Lena’s eyes filled.

“After your panic attack last winter. For the insurance review.”

I remembered that night.

A restaurant flood.

Micah sick.

Brett unreachable.

I had sat on the kitchen floor because I couldn’t get enough air.

Lena had driven me to urgent care.

“You told him?”

“He said the company needed documentation.”

“What did you tell him?”

“That you were exhausted. That you needed help.”

Brett had turned help into a weapon.

But Lena had handed him the handle.

“You should have asked me.”

“I know.”

“No. You should have asked me then.”

Ruth studied the statement.

“The original context matters. Can you provide the email where he requested it?”

“Yes.”

“And a truthful clarification?”

“Yes.”

I couldn’t look at her.

She left quietly.

That afternoon, Micah came home from school with his jaw clenched.

“Dad picked me up.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

“He was outside. He said he wanted to talk.”

“Did you get in his car?”

“No.”

Micah sat at the table.

“He said you were trying to take his restaurants.”

“What else?”

“That you’d make him move away.”

I pulled a chair close.

“That decision would be his.”

“He said I could fix it.”

“How?”

Micah looked down.

“Tell the judge you made me do the slideshow.”

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

Then my son reached into his backpack.

“I didn’t know what to say.”

He laid his phone on the table.

“So I left the voice recorder on.”
