Chương 4 - LOCKED OUT

Micah slept badly at Lena’s apartment.
I heard him turning on the couch before dawn.
At six, he appeared in the kitchen.
“Did I ruin everything?”
I put down my coffee.
“No.”
“Dad looked like he hated me.”
I pulled out the chair beside me.
“What your dad did last night was his choice.”
“But I showed the pictures.”
“And those pictures were true.”
He stared at the table.
“Being right doesn’t always feel good.”
“No,” I said.
“It doesn’t.”
Lena drove us to my office above our original restaurant.
A security contractor stood at the stairs.
He knew my name.
He still blocked the door.
“Orders from management.”
“I am management.”
“Not according to the list.”
Behind the glass, I saw my framed recipes stacked on the floor.
My grandmother’s mixing bowl sat in a cardboard box.
Sierra stood beside my desk, directing two movers.
I called her.
She looked at her phone and declined.
A minute later, she came downstairs.
“This doesn’t need to be ugly.”
“You’re packing my office.”
“Brett asked me to preserve your things.”
“Put the blue box in my hands.”
“There isn’t a blue box.”
Lena looked at her.
“I saw it yesterday.”
Sierra folded her arms.
“Then ask Brett.”
I lifted my phone and began recording the doorway.
“Please confirm that you are refusing to return my personal property.”
Her expression shifted.
“I didn’t say that.”
“Then bring it down.”
She disappeared upstairs.
The box she returned with contained photographs, recipe cards, and old receipts.
The ownership papers were gone.
So was the ledger Grandma kept during our first two years.
I counted the folders.
Sierra watched.
“Anything else?”
“Yes. Stop touching my things.”
At noon, I met an attorney named Ruth Calder.
She listened without interrupting.
Then she placed the transfer photocopy beside my real signature.
“You may have a forgery claim,” she said.
“May?”
“We prove it. We don’t just say it.”
She sent preservation notices that afternoon.
Company records.
Electronic files.
Security footage.
The supposed original transfer.
I was still in her office when an email arrived from a hotel guest.
She had filmed part of the gala.
In the background, beyond Brett’s shoulder, the projection technician’s monitor was visible.
Someone had opened a file titled:
AUDREY_EXIT_FINAL.
It had been created before Micah touched the microphone.

Before I said a word.
Before my husband walked into the room.
