Chương 11 - WHAT MICAH HEARD

The next morning, Micah refused breakfast.
“Everybody at school saw the video.”
I turned off the stove.
“What are they saying?”
“That Dad has a girlfriend.”
He scraped his thumbnail along the edge of the table.
“One kid said I destroyed my family for attention.”
I felt anger rise so fast I had to sit down.
“What did you do?”
“Walked away.”
“That was hard.”
“Yeah.”
He looked at me.
“Are you getting divorced?”
“Yes.”
I had promised myself I wouldn’t answer him with fog.
He blinked quickly.
“Will I still see Dad?”
“We’ll work out something safe and fair.”
“Do I have to hate him?”
“No.”
The word came easily.
The feeling behind it didn’t.
“You can love him and still know he did something wrong.”
Micah cried then.
Quietly.
Like he was embarrassed by it.
I moved beside him and held him.
That afternoon, Lena brought the original email about her statement.
Brett had requested it under the subject line INSURANCE SUPPORT.
He had promised it would remain confidential.
She also brought her own resignation letter.
“I won’t help him do this.”
“I needed you to tell me before.”
“I know.”
Trust didn’t return because she said the right thing.
But she could still make a truthful statement.
Ruth took it.
At the temporary family hearing, Brett wore the tie Micah gave him for Father’s Day.
He talked about stability.
About privacy.
About my public humiliation of him.
Then Ruth introduced the school pickup and the preserved recording through the proper process.
The judge asked Brett one question.
“Did you ask your son to give a false account?”
Brett began explaining.
The judge repeated the question.
He stopped.
Temporary arrangements were set.
No surprise school pickups.
No discussing litigation with Micah.
Communication through a parenting app.
Outside the courthouse, Brett walked toward me.
“You think you won?”
“I think our son gets to go to school without being recruited.”
He leaned closer.
“You should ask Sierra what happened to the original ledger.”
I watched him leave.
Ten minutes later, Sierra sent me a message.
Can we meet?
May you like
Then a second.
I kept a copy.
