Chapter 9 - The Day I Stopped Running

The next morning, I made a decision.

I was done defending myself.

I was done explaining.

I was done hoping Brandon would suddenly become the man I married.

That man was gone.

Or maybe he was never real.

I met Melissa at her office.

“I want everything filed.”

She looked at me.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“This will change your marriage permanently.”

I looked at the papers.

“My marriage changed the moment my husband helped someone steal from his own family.”

Melissa nodded.

“Then we begin.”

The first step was freezing every shared account.

The second was protecting Skylar’s trust.

The third was sending official notices.

When Brandon received them, his reaction was immediate.

My phone rang.

I answered.

“What?”

“Charlotte, what did you do?”

I almost smiled.

The same question.

Always.

Not:

Why did I hurt you?

Not:

How do I fix this?

Only:

What did you do?

“I protected myself.”

“You’re destroying everything.”

“No.”

I looked out the window.

“You destroyed it when you chose them over us.”

His voice became desperate.

“Please. We can fix this.”

I closed my eyes.

“Brandon, you had months to fix it.”

Silence.

Then he whispered:

“I’m still your husband.”

I felt a tear fall.

Because that sentence hurt.

Not because I believed it.

Because I remembered when I wanted to believe it.

“I needed a husband six months ago.”

I hung up.

That evening, I received another surprise.

A letter.

From Gertrude’s attorney.

They were demanding custody rights.

Again.

But this time

They had something different.

They claimed Skylar wanted to live with them.

I immediately called my daughter.

“Skylar?”

“Yes, Mom?”

“Did anyone ask you if you wanted to live somewhere else?”

She became quiet.

Then whispered:

“Grandma asked me.”

My heart sank.

“What did you say?”

“I said I wanted to stay with you.”

I closed my eyes.

“Then why would they say that?”

Skylar hesitated.

“Grandma told me not to worry.”

“About what?”

“She said soon everything would change.”

Everything would change.

Those words felt like a warning.

That night, I reviewed the final piece of evidence.

A security camera recording from our house.

I had installed it months ago after the missing documents started.

I opened the footage.

And there they were.

Brandon.

Gertrude.

Hailey.

Standing in my office.

Going through my files.

The timestamp was clear.

They had been searching my private documents while I was at work.

Then Brandon said something.

Something I never expected.

“If Charlotte fights back, we need to make sure she looks unstable.”

Gertrude answered:

“Don’t worry. We already started.”

I covered my mouth.

They weren’t just stealing.

They were building a case against me.

A fake story.

A fake version of my life.

I watched the screen.

And then I saw Hailey walk toward the camera.

She looked directly at it.

Like she knew it was there.

Then she smiled.

And whispered:

“Good luck proving anything.”

The video ended.

I sat there in silence.

Then I smiled.

Because they had just made their biggest mistake.

They thought they had destroyed the evidence.

They didn’t know

I had copies.

Every single one.

May you like

And now I was ready to show the world who they really were.
