Chapter 4 - The Person Who Knew Everything

The person standing at my front door wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone Brandon thought would never find out.

A woman in a dark blue blazer stood there holding a thick envelope.

Behind her was a man carrying a briefcase.

Brandon’s face turned pale.

“No
”

That single word told me everything.

I looked between him and the visitors.

“Brandon?”

He didn’t answer.

The woman stepped forward.

“Charlotte Carter?”

“Yes.”

She handed me the envelope.

“My name is Rachel Morgan. I’m a financial investigator hired by your bank’s fraud department.”

The room went completely silent.

Gertrude’s expression changed immediately.

Fraud department.

That word had weight.

“What is this about?” Brandon asked.

Rachel looked at him.

“Mr. Carter, you already know.”

His jaw tightened.

“No, I don’t.”

She opened her folder.

“Then maybe we should start with the unauthorized financing applications submitted under your wife’s identity.”

Hailey stopped breathing.

Gertrude sat down slowly.

I opened the envelope.

Inside were printed documents.

Bank records.

Application forms.

Communication logs.

Everything.

Rachel continued.

“Your wife reported suspicious activity six months ago. Since then, we have been monitoring several accounts connected to her personal information.”

Brandon looked at me.

“You reported me?”

I stared at him.

“No.”

My voice was calm.

“I protected myself.”

“You went behind my back?”

I almost smiled.

The man who had been hiding things from me was upset because I found out.

“You were already behind my back.”

Rachel looked at the documents.

“Mr. Carter, we also discovered that someone attempted to transfer ownership rights connected to the family property.”

My stomach tightened.

Ownership rights.

Not just renovation.

They were trying to control my house.

Gertrude suddenly stood.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

Rachel looked at her.

“Mrs. Whitman, your name appears on several communications.”

Gertrude froze.

Hailey looked at her mother.

“Mom?”

The room changed.

The confidence disappeared.

The fake smiles disappeared.

Now they looked like people who had been caught.

Brandon stepped toward me.

“Charlotte, listen to me.”

I stepped back.

“No.”

“Please.”

That word surprised me.

Because Brandon rarely said please.

Not when he was demanding.

Not when he was lying.

Not when he was spending my money.

Only when he was losing control.

“You don’t understand.”

I looked at him.

“Then explain.”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Rachel closed her folder.

“That’s what I thought.”

After they left, nobody spoke.

The house that had once felt like my safe place suddenly felt unfamiliar.

Brandon sat on the couch with his hands covering his face.

Gertrude looked angry.

Not guilty.

Angry.

Like she was blaming me for exposing her.

“You ruined everything,” she whispered.

I turned toward her.

“Excuse me?”

She looked up.

“You have no idea what we were trying to accomplish.”

I laughed softly.

“No. I know exactly what you were trying to accomplish.”

Brandon looked at me.

“Charlotte
”

I interrupted him.

“No more lies.”

My voice cracked.

“You watched me work twelve-hour days.”

“You watched me pay every bill.”

“You watched me trust you.”

I pointed toward the dining room.

“And you sat there eating expensive food while my daughter ate soup alone.”

Skylar’s face appeared in my mind.

The way she hid the cup.

The way she asked if she was allowed to order dinner.

I swallowed my anger.

“That was the moment you lost me.”

Brandon looked away.

Then he said something I never expected.

“Mom had a plan.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

He looked nervous.

“She said if we finished the renovation, the house value would increase.”

I waited.

“And?”

He hesitated.

“She wanted to refinance.”

My heart dropped.

“Using my house?”

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

That night, after everyone went to bed, I sat alone in my office.

I opened the hidden folder.

I reviewed every piece of evidence.

But then I found something new.

A message I had never seen before.

A conversation between Brandon and Gertrude.

The date was three months earlier.

The message from Gertrude said:

“She doesn’t need to know yet. Once the loan is approved, everything will be under control.”

My hands went cold.

Then Brandon replied:

“What if Charlotte finds out?”

Gertrude answered:

“She won’t. She trusts you.”

I stared at the screen.

The person I trusted most

Was the person who helped betray me.

Then another message appeared.

A message sent only days ago.

Gertrude wrote:

“If she blocks the money, we move to Plan B.”

Plan B?

I leaned closer.

But the next message was deleted.

Only one sentence remained.

“Make sure Skylar is not involved.”

My heart stopped.

Because suddenly I realized something.

They weren’t just afraid of losing money.

They were afraid I would discover something much worse.

May you like

Something involving my daughter.
