Chapter 12 - The Truth About Skylar

The next morning, Melissa arrived with a file.

She didn’t sit down immediately.

That scared me.

“What is it?”

She placed the folder on the table.

“Your daughter’s birth records.”

My hands went cold.

“I don’t understand.”

“I checked the documents Brandon mentioned.”

She opened the folder.

“There is an inconsistency.”

“What kind?”

Melissa looked at me carefully.

“Someone accessed Skylar’s records recently.”

My heart raced.

“Who?”

She handed me a paper.

A signature.

A request form.

And a name.

Gertrude Whitman.

I felt sick.

“My mother-in-law accessed my daughter’s records?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Melissa looked through the file.

“That’s what we’re trying to find out.”

I went through every memory.

Every moment.

Every conversation.

And suddenly, small things started making sense.

The way Gertrude always asked questions about Skylar.

The way she talked about “protecting” her.

The way she kept saying:

“Children need stability.”

At the time, I thought she was being controlling.

Now I wondered if she had been preparing something.

That afternoon, I confronted Brandon.

He answered immediately.

“Charlotte.”

“What did your mother find in Skylar’s records?”

Silence.

Then:

“You know?”

My heart dropped.

“You knew?”

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You knew.”

“Charlotte, listen—”

“No.”

My voice cracked.

“How long?”

“Not long.”

“How long?”

He whispered:

“Two months.”

I closed my eyes.

Two months.

He knew.

And he said nothing.

“What is it?”

He hesitated.

“I found out Mom was trying to use it.”

“Use what?”

Another pause.

Then he said:

“There was a mistake in the hospital records.”

I felt confused.

“What mistake?”

He took a breath.

“Your mother-in-law thinks she can use it to challenge your custody.”

I froze.

“She thinks she can take Skylar because of a paperwork issue?”

“Yes.”

I felt anger rise.

“She isn’t even her mother.”

“I know.”

“Then why didn’t you stop her?”

Brandon was silent.

And that silence destroyed whatever was left.

Because the answer was obvious.

He was scared.

He chose himself.

Again.

That evening, I found the final piece.

A letter hidden inside Gertrude’s old notebook.

The handwriting was hers.

The words were clear.

“If the biological issue becomes public, Charlotte loses her position. Brandon becomes the only legal parent figure.”

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

My hands shook.

Biological issue?

What was she talking about?

I immediately called Melissa.

“She knew.”

“Who?”

“Gertrude.”

“About what?”

I stared at the paper.

“I don’t know yet.”

Melissa was silent.

Then she said:

“Charlotte, whatever this is
”

“Yes?”

“You need to prepare yourself.”

I looked toward Skylar’s bedroom.

My daughter.

My entire world.

“What are you saying?”

Melissa lowered her voice.

“I think the next secret they planned to use
”

“Could change everything.”

I held the paper tightly.

Because after months of lies
