Chapter 6 - The Line They Should Never Have Crossed

I arrived at Skylar’s school in less than twenty minutes.

I don’t remember the drive.

I only remember one thought repeating in my head.

They went after my daughter.

Not my money.

Not my house.

My daughter.

When I entered the school office, Skylar was sitting in a chair near the counselor’s desk.

The moment she saw me, she ran.

“Mom!”

I hugged her tightly.

“Are you okay?”

She nodded.

“I’m okay.”

I looked at the counselor.

“What happened?”

She handed me a report.

“A woman came here this morning asking questions.”

“Who?”

“She said she was Skylar’s grandmother.”

My jaw tightened.

“Gertrude.”

The counselor nodded.

“She asked about custody arrangements.”

My blood turned cold.

“Custody?”

“Yes.”

Skylar looked confused.

“Why would Grandma ask that?”

I had no answer.

Because how do you explain betrayal to a child?

How do you tell your daughter that the people eating at your table were secretly planning against you?

I knelt beside her.

“Sweetheart, did Grandma say anything else?”

Skylar looked down.

“She asked if you were a good mother.”

My heart broke.

“She asked if I was a good mother?”

Skylar nodded.

“She said sometimes kids need someone else to protect them.”

I closed my eyes.

They were building a story.

A story where I was the problem.

A story where they were the heroes.

That night, I made one decision.

No more waiting.

No more collecting quietly.

It was time to move.

I called Rachel.

“I want everything ready.”

She understood immediately.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“Once this starts, there’s no going back.”

I looked at Skylar sleeping peacefully in her room.

“Yes.”

“There was no going back the moment they involved my daughter.”

The next morning, I met with an attorney.

Her name was Melissa Grant.

She reviewed every document.

Every recording.

Every message.

After two hours, she looked at me.

“Charlotte, your evidence is strong.”

“What can we do?”

“First, protect your assets.”

“Second?”

“Protect your daughter.”

I nodded.

“And Brandon?”

Melissa closed the folder.

“If these documents are authentic, he may have serious legal problems.”

I looked out the window.

A part of me still couldn’t believe this was my life.

The man I married.

The man who promised forever.

Was now someone I needed protection from.

When I returned home, Brandon was waiting.

But this time

He wasn’t alone.

Gertrude was there.

And beside her was a man in a suit holding a folder.

Brandon looked at me.

“We need to settle this.”

I slowly placed my bag down.

“Settle what?”

Gertrude smiled.

“That you’re being unreasonable.”

I almost laughed.

The man in the suit opened the folder.

“Mrs. Carter, we have documentation regarding your mental and emotional stability.”

My smile disappeared.

“What?”

Gertrude crossed her arms.

“You’ve been under a lot of stress.”

I stared at them.

Then I understood.

They weren’t defending themselves.

They were attacking me.

The man continued:

“We believe a temporary custody arrangement may be necessary.”

My hands went cold.

Custody.

They actually did it.

They tried to take my daughter.

I looked at Brandon.

Waiting.

Hoping.

Begging him silently to say something.

Anything.

But he just stood there.

Quiet.

And that silence hurt more than any lie.

I looked at the three people in front of me.

Then I smiled.

A calm smile.

Because they thought they had won.

They thought they had cornered me.

They didn’t know one thing.

I had spent six months preparing for this exact moment.

I reached into my purse.

Pulled out my phone.

And placed it on the table.

“I think you should listen to this.”

I pressed play.

The recording started.

And the first voice everyone heard was Brandon’s.

“I know Charlotte trusts me.”

His own words filled the room.

Gertrude’s face changed.

The man in the suit looked confused.

And Brandon

Brandon looked terrified.

Because he finally realized.

The woman he underestimated

Had been ready for war.
