Chapter 10 - The Courtroom Trap

The morning of the hearing, I woke up before my alarm.

I stared at the ceiling for a long time.

A year ago, I never imagined my life would come to this.

I thought my biggest worries were deadlines at work, school projects for Skylar, and what to cook for dinner.

I never thought I would sit in a courtroom fighting against the people who shared my last name.

But life has a strange way of showing you the truth.

Sometimes the people closest to you are the ones you have to protect yourself from.

I walked into the courthouse holding Skylar’s hand.

She looked nervous.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Are we going to be okay?”

I squeezed her hand.

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

I looked at her.

“Because the truth doesn’t need to hide.”

She smiled slightly.

And for the first time in days, I saw my daughter relax.

Brandon was already there.

He stood beside Gertrude and Hailey.

They looked different.

Less confident.

More careful.

But they were still pretending.

Gertrude looked at me.

“You’re really doing this?”

I stared at her.

“You started it.”

She shook her head.

“You’re destroying your own family.”

I looked at Brandon.

“No.”

My voice was quiet.

“You did that when you chose lies over your wife and daughter.”

Brandon looked away.

That hurt more than anger.

Because deep down, some part of me still wanted him to fight for us.

But he wasn’t.

Not really.

He was fighting for himself.

Inside the courtroom, their attorney presented their story first.

They painted me as unstable.

Overworked.

Emotional.

A woman who had “suddenly become paranoid.”

I sat there listening.

Every lie.

Every twisted version of the truth.

Then their attorney said:

“Your Honor, the defense believes Mrs. Carter has become obsessed with controlling the family finances.”

I almost laughed.

Controlling finances?

The same people who used my identity?

The same people who emptied accounts behind my back?

The same people who tried to use my daughter’s future?

But I waited.

Because Melissa told me something important.

“Don’t interrupt their lies.”

“Let them build the story.”

“Then we destroy it.”

When it was our turn, Melissa stood.

“Your Honor, the other side has presented a story.”

She placed a folder on the table.

“But we have evidence.”

The first document was the fake renovation contract.

The second was the unauthorized loan application.

The third was the hidden account records.

The courtroom became quiet.

Then Melissa played the audio recording.

Brandon’s voice filled the room.

“She trusts me. She won’t question anything until it’s too late.”

Brandon lowered his head.

Gertrude looked furious.

But Melissa wasn’t finished.

Then came the video from the security camera.

Everyone watched as Brandon, Gertrude, and Hailey searched through my private documents.

Then came the final recording.

The one where Gertrude discussed making me appear unstable.

The judge watched silently.

When the video ended, nobody spoke.

Finally, the judge looked at Brandon.

“Mr. Carter, do you deny these conversations?”

Brandon opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the moment I knew.

The truth had finally caught up with them.

After the hearing, Melissa received a phone call.

She walked back toward me slowly.

“Charlotte.”

I immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?”

She handed me her phone.

“There’s one more thing.”

I looked at the screen.

A message.

From the fake renovation company.

My face went pale.

Because the message wasn’t about money.

It was about Skylar.

The message said:

“Phase two needs to begin before the custody hearing.”

I looked at Melissa.

“What is phase two?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

May you like

“I think we need to find out before they do it.”
