Chapter 2 - THE MAN WHO HEARD EVERYTHING

For five seconds, nobody moved.
The skillet was still raised in Agnes’s hand.
My body was frozen.
My mind was trying to understand what had just happened.
Leo was home.
Not tomorrow.
Not next week.
Now.
Standing behind me.
Watching his mother hold a cast-iron weapon above my head.
Agnes slowly lowered her arm.
“Leo...” she whispered.
Her voice changed instantly.
The anger disappeared.
The cruelty disappeared.
Suddenly, she was the loving mother everyone else knew.
“I can explain.”
Leo didn’t look at her.
He looked at me.
At my pale face.
My shaking hands.
The suitcase beside my feet.
Then he looked at the skillet.
His expression became something I had never seen before.
Disappointment.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
“What were you going to do with that?” he asked.
Agnes opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Chloe stood up from the couch.
“Leo, wait. You don’t understand.”
He finally looked at her.
“Then explain.”
Chloe swallowed.
“She was yelling at Mom.”
I stared at her.
I couldn’t believe it.
Even now.
Even after everything.
She was lying.
Leo looked at me.
“Is that true?”
The question hurt.
Not because he asked.
Because after everything he had just seen...
A part of him still needed confirmation.
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I was too tired to cry.
“No.”
My voice was barely above a whisper.
“I came home from emergency surgery.”
Leo’s face changed.
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
I looked at Agnes.
“You don’t know what happened here.”
The room became silent.
I took a breath.
“My surgery wasn’t planned.”
Leo stared at me.
“What?”
“I collapsed in this kitchen.”
His eyes moved toward the floor.
The exact spot where I had fallen.
“When?”
“Two days ago.”
His face lost color.
“Two days?”
I nodded.
“Where were they?”
Nobody answered.
That was the answer.
Leo slowly turned toward his mother.
“Mom?”
Agnes immediately stepped forward.
“Oh, honey, don’t listen to her. She’s emotional. She just got out of the hospital.”
I almost smiled.
Even now.
She was still doing it.
Making me sound unstable.
Making herself sound reasonable.
Leo looked between us.
“What happened?”
I wanted to speak.
I wanted to tell him everything.
Every insult.
Every moment.
Every time I swallowed my anger to protect his relationship with his family.
But before I could say anything, Agnes started crying.
“I have no idea why she’s attacking me.”
There it was.
The performance.
The tears.
The victim act.
“She came in here angry,” Agnes continued. “She threatened to leave. She blamed us.”
Chloe nodded quickly.
“She’s been acting crazy since she came back.”
I looked at them.
Two people who had watched me suffer.
Two people who had not sent one message.
Two people who were now pretending I was the problem.
Then Leo said something I never expected.
“Stop.”
Everyone went quiet.
His voice was low.
But firm.
“Both of you.”
Agnes stared at him.
“Leo—”
“No.”
He looked at the skillet.
Then back at her.
“I saw what happened.”
The room froze.
Because there was no story she could create.
No excuse.
No explanation.
He had seen the truth.
Agnes’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
She was afraid.
Leo walked toward me.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
I looked at him.
The question sounded simple.
But it wasn’t.
“Because I shouldn’t have had to.”
His eyebrows pulled together.
“What does that mean?”
“It means I almost died, Leo.”
My voice cracked.
“And the first forty-eight hours after surgery, I sat alone.”
His face dropped.
“I called you.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“And you asked where your mother was.”
Silence.
I watched that sentence hit him.
Hard.
“I needed my husband.”
My eyes filled.
“I needed someone to ask if I was okay.”
Leo looked away.
For once, he had no answer.
Agnes stepped between us.
“Leo, she’s twisting things.”
He turned.
“No.”
The word was sharp.
“She isn’t.”
That was the first time I saw Agnes lose control.
“You’re taking her side?”
Leo stared at her.
“I’m taking the side of reality.”
Nobody spoke.
Then my body betrayed me.
A wave of pain hit my stomach.
I grabbed the wall.
Leo immediately moved toward me.
“Are you okay?”
That question almost broke me.
Because it was the first time someone had asked.
Really asked.
“I need to sit down.”
He helped me to the couch.
Agnes watched.
And I saw something in her eyes.
Not concern.
Not guilt.
Resentment.
Like my pain was stealing attention she believed belonged to her.
That was when I understood.
This wasn’t over.
Not even close.
Because as Leo helped me upstairs to rest, I heard Agnes whisper behind us.
“She’s destroying this family.”
I stopped walking.
Then Leo stopped too.
Because he heard it.

And this time...
He didn’t ignore it.
