Chapter 15 - THE LIFE I CHOSE

One year later, I stood in my own kitchen.

My own kitchen.

That still felt strange.

For years, kitchens had meant exhaustion.

Orders.

Criticism.

Fear.

Now, it meant something different.

Peace.

The sunlight came through the window.

A cup of coffee sat beside me.

No one was demanding anything.

No one was judging me.

No one was waiting for me to fail.

Just silence.

The kind of silence I used to dream about.

Leo walked in behind me.

“You’re smiling.”

I turned.

“I am.”

He smiled.

“I like seeing that.”

Things between us weren’t magically fixed.

Real damage doesn’t disappear overnight.

We went to counseling.

We learned how to talk.

How to listen.

How to stop hiding pain until it became impossible to ignore.

Some days were hard.

Some memories still hurt.

But we rebuilt.

Slowly.

Honestly.

Without secrets.

Chloe changed too.

She testified against Agnes.

She apologized to me.

Not once.

Many times.

And I believed her.

Not because I forgot what she did.

But because people can become better when they finally stop protecting the wrong things.

As for Agnes and Richard...

They faced the consequences of their choices.

The court decided their future.

Not me.

And that mattered.

Because for so long, I had been fighting to prove I deserved kindness.

I finally understood something.

I never needed to prove that.

The day I came home from surgery, I thought my life was ending.

I thought losing my marriage would destroy me.

I thought walking away meant I had failed.

I was wrong.

Walking away was the first time I saved myself.

Sometimes the hardest goodbye isn’t leaving a person.

It’s leaving the version of yourself that accepted being hurt.

I still remember the sound of that skillet hitting the doorframe.

I remember the fear.

The shock.

The pain.

But I remember something else too.

The voice behind me.

“Agnes.”

The moment the truth finally came out.

The moment I stopped being invisible.

The moment I chose myself.

And if there is one thing I know now...

It’s this:

No one gets to decide your worth.

Not your family.

Not your spouse.

Not anyone.

May you like

Because the person who has to fight for you first...

Is you.
