Chapter 12 - THE LAST MOVE

Agnes was free.

That fact changed everything.

We thought the evidence was enough.

We thought the truth would finally stop her.

We were wrong.

People like Agnes don’t stop when they lose.

They become more dangerous.

For three days, nothing happened.

No messages.

No calls.

No threats.

And somehow, that scared me more.

Because silence from Agnes was never peace.

It was preparation.

Then Chloe called.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

Her voice sounded different.

Broken.

“She’s coming after you.”

I closed my eyes.

“What?”

“My mom.”

I looked at Leo.

“What happened?”

“She knows about the investigation.”

“How?”

Chloe was quiet.

Then she said:

“Because someone inside the police department is helping her.”

My stomach dropped.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying she knows every move before it happens.”

Leo took the phone.

“Chloe, listen carefully. Who helped her get released?”

“I don’t know.”

“Find out.”

“I’m trying.”

Her voice cracked.

“But there’s something else.”

“What?”

“She wasn’t only stealing your money.”

Leo went silent.

“What else?”

“She was building something.”

“What?”

Chloe whispered:

“A backup plan.”

That night, we checked the files again.

There was one folder we had missed.

Hidden.

Encrypted.

Leo spent hours trying to open it.

Finally, at 2:17 in the morning, it opened.

Inside was a video.

Agnes.

Sitting in the same house.

Talking to someone off camera.

I watched her smile.

A cold smile.

“If Leo chooses her, we remove the problem.”

My blood turned cold.

The video continued.

“She has always been emotional. People will believe she is unstable.”

Leo grabbed the edge of the table.

Because Agnes wasn’t just planning to separate us.

She was planning to destroy me.

Then the person behind the camera spoke.

A man’s voice.

“We need to make sure Leo has no reason to trust her.”

I looked at Leo.

He looked terrified.

Because he recognized the voice.

“Who is that?”

He didn’t answer.

“Leo.”

He slowly stood.

His face had gone completely pale.

“That’s impossible.”

“Who is it?”

He looked at me.

And whispered:

“My father.”

I froze.

“Your father?”

Leo nodded.

“But he’s dead.”

The room went silent.

Because the voice in the video...

Was supposed to belong to a dead man.

Then the video ended.

And a new message appeared on the screen.

One sentence.

You were never supposed to find this.

At that exact moment...

The lights in the house went out.

Everything became dark.

Then we heard the sound of the front door opening.

Someone had entered.

Leo grabbed my hand.

And whispered:

“Don’t move.”

A shadow appeared in the hallway.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Coming closer.

Then a familiar voice said:

“I told you to stop digging.”

May you like

And I knew.

Agnes wasn’t working alone.
