Chapter 10 - THE FILES THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The flash drive looked tiny in Chloe’s hand.
Almost meaningless.
A small piece of plastic.
But the way Agnes stared at it told me everything.
That wasn’t just a file.
That was a weapon.
“Give me that,” Agnes said.
Her voice wasn’t angry anymore.
It was desperate.
Chloe stepped back.
“No.”
The room went completely silent.
Because nobody expected Chloe to say that.
Not even Chloe herself.
Agnes stared at her daughter.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.”
Chloe shook her head.
“No, Mom.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.”
Leo walked closer.
“What’s on that drive?”
Chloe looked at him.
“Everything.”
He frowned.
“Everything?”
“The bank transfers. The messages. The names.”
My heart started beating faster.
“The names of who?”
Chloe looked at Agnes.
Then whispered:
“Everyone who helped her.”
Agnes’s face changed.
For the first time, she looked trapped.
Leo took the drive.
But before he could connect it to his laptop, Agnes moved.
She grabbed the computer from the table and threw it across the room.
The sound of it hitting the floor echoed through the house.
Everyone froze.
Leo stared at her.
“What are you doing?”
Agnes’s breathing became heavy.
“You don’t understand.”
“No,” Leo said.
“I think I finally do.”
She shook her head.
“No, you don’t.”
Her voice cracked.
“You think this is about money.”
Nobody spoke.
“Money was never the point.”
I looked at her.
“Then what was?”
Agnes looked directly at me.
“You.”
The word hit harder than I expected.
“Me?”
She stepped closer.
“You think you’re innocent?”
Leo immediately moved between us.
“Don’t.”
But Agnes continued.
“You came into this family and changed everything.”
I laughed quietly.
“By existing?”
“By taking my place.”
There it was.
The truth.
The ugly truth she had buried beneath years of fake smiles.
Agnes didn’t hate me because I was difficult.
She hated me because she couldn’t control me.
Leo looked devastated.
“Mom, this isn’t normal.”
She looked at him.
“You’re choosing her?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
That hesitation hurt.
But then he said:
“I’m choosing the truth.”
Agnes looked away.
And something inside her broke.
Not because she regretted anything.
Because she lost.
The police arrived thirty minutes later.
Apparently, Chloe had already contacted them before we came.
She knew things were about to explode.
As officers walked through the house, Agnes stayed silent.
Too silent.
I thought it was over.
I was wrong.
Because before they took her away, she leaned toward me.
Close enough that only I could hear.
“You think you survived me?”
I looked at her.
She smiled.
“You survived the easy part.”
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?”
She didn’t answer.
She just looked at Leo.
Then whispered:
“Ask your husband what happened before you met.”
My heart dropped.
Again.
Another secret.
Another hidden piece of the past.
The police led her away.
But her final words stayed with me.
Because I knew Agnes.
She didn’t make empty threats.
That night, when Leo and I were finally alone, I asked the question.
“What happened before we met?”
Leo went completely still.
And I knew.
May you like
Whatever the answer was...
It was something he never wanted me to know.
