Chapter 11 - THE SECRET LEO HID

Leo sat on the edge of the bed.

For several minutes, he didn’t say anything.

I watched him struggle.

Not with finding the words.

With deciding whether to tell me.

Finally, I spoke.

“How bad is it?”

He looked up.

“Bad.”

That one word was enough.

I sat down across from him.

“Tell me.”

He took a deep breath.

“Before I met you, I made a mistake.”

I waited.

“My first company failed.”

I frowned.

“I knew that.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You knew I had struggled. You didn’t know why.”

I stayed quiet.

“Agnes helped me.”

I almost laughed.

“Your mother?”

“Yes.”

The irony was painful.

“The same woman who controlled everything?”

He nodded.

“At the time, I thought she was saving me.”

“What did she do?”

“She paid off my debts.”

I looked at him.

“And what did she want in return?”

He didn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

“Control.”

He nodded.

“She wanted to be involved in every decision.”

“Your business?”

“My life.”

The room became silent.

“I thought I owed her.”

Leo looked down.

“She reminded me every day.”

I understood.

Because I had lived with Agnes too.

Her kindness always came with a price.

“She told me I would never succeed without her.”

I whispered:

“And you believed her.”

“Yes.”

That answer hurt.

Not because he was weak.

Because I realized how long Agnes had been building her control.

Years.

Maybe decades.

Then Leo said something that shocked me.

“She knew about you before I introduced you.”

I froze.

“What?”

“She investigated you.”

“Why?”

“Because she wanted to know if you were a threat.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“A threat to what?”

Leo looked at me.

“To her relationship with me.”

Everything suddenly made sense.

The small comments.

The insults.

The way Agnes always compared me to herself.

She wasn’t judging me.

She was fighting me.

From the beginning.

“She tried to break us apart before we even started.”

Leo nodded.

“I didn’t know.”

I looked away.

“I know.”

And somehow, that was the saddest part.

Because he truly didn’t know.

The next morning, we opened the flash drive.

There were hundreds of files.

Emails.

Bank records.

Private messages.

Photos.

Then we found something unexpected.

A folder with my name on it.

I stared at the screen.

“What is that?”

Leo clicked.

Inside were documents.

My personal information.

My medical history.

My employment records.

My family details.

I felt sick.

“She was investigating me.”

Leo’s face turned pale.

“She was watching you.”

Then we found the final document.

A plan.

A detailed plan.

The title was:

Operation Separation.

I stared at the words.

“What is that?”

Leo opened the file.

And every sentence made my hands shake.

Agnes had been planning for months.

She wanted me gone.

She wanted Leo dependent on her again.

And at the bottom of the document...

There was a date.

The date wasn’t from this year.

It was from before our wedding.

Before I ever entered that house.

Before I ever knew her.

Leo whispered:

“She planned this from the beginning.”

Then his phone rang.

A lawyer.

Calling about Agnes’s case.

Leo answered.

His expression changed.

“What do you mean she was released?”

I looked at him.

“Released?”

He slowly lowered the phone.

“She made bail.”

My stomach tightened.

“How?”

He looked at me.

“Someone paid for her.”

A silence filled the room.

Because we both knew the question.

Who would help Agnes?

And why?
