Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH IN THE DARK

The figure stepped into the hallway.
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
My mind was racing through every possibility.
Agnes.
Someone she hired.
Someone sent to scare us.
But it wasn’t any of those.
The person standing in front of us was someone we never expected.
Mark.
Leo’s business partner.
The man who had betrayed him.
The man who helped Agnes.
Leo stepped forward.
“You.”
Mark looked exhausted.
Not dangerous.
Not angry.
Just broken.
“I didn’t want it to happen this way.”
Leo laughed bitterly.
“You broke into my house.”
Mark looked around.
“Because you weren’t listening.”
I stepped closer.
“You expect us to believe that?”
Mark looked at me.
“I know what it looks like.”
“No,” I said.
“You know exactly what it looks like.”
He lowered his eyes.
For the first time, I saw guilt on his face.
“I made mistakes.”
Leo’s voice was cold.
“You stole from me.”
“Yes.”
“You helped my mother destroy my marriage.”
“Yes.”
“You threatened us.”
Mark hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Yes.”
The honesty shocked me.
Because I expected another lie.
Another excuse.
Instead, he looked tired.
Like someone who had been running from the truth for too long.
“Agnes had something on me.”
Leo stared.
“What?”
“My family.”
The room went quiet.
Mark continued.
“She found out about my past.”
“What past?”
He swallowed.
“Years ago, I made a financial mistake. A bad one.”
Leo shook his head.
“So you let her control you?”
“I thought I had no choice.”
I looked at him.
“There is always a choice.”
He looked at me.
And I knew he understood.
Because that was exactly what I had learned.
For years, I chose silence.
I chose pretending.
I chose peace.
Until peace almost killed me.
Mark reached into his jacket.
Leo immediately tensed.
But Mark pulled out a folder.
“I brought this because I knew eventually she would turn on me too.”
He placed it on the table.
“What is it?”
“Proof.”
Leo opened it.
Inside were bank records.
Messages.
Photos.
Everything.
And one document that made Leo stop breathing.
“What?”
I looked at him.
He turned the page toward me.
It was a life insurance policy.
My name was on it.
I felt sick.
“Why is my name there?”
Mark looked away.
“Because Agnes planned for something to happen to you.”
The room became ice cold.
Leo’s face changed completely.
“No.”
Mark nodded.
“She wanted it to look like an accident.”
My hand covered my mouth.
Suddenly, the skillet wasn’t just an act of anger.
It was something worse.
A test.
A moment of losing control.
Agnes had been capable of more than cruelty.
She had been capable of violence.
Leo picked up his phone.
“We’re going to the police.”
Mark stopped him.
“Wait.”
“Why?”
“Because there’s one more thing.”
Leo stared.
“What?”
Mark looked at the screen showing the hidden video.
“The person who paid Agnes’s bail.”
A pause.
Then:
“It wasn’t a stranger.”
Leo’s face tightened.
“Who was it?”
Mark looked at me.
Then at Leo.
And said:
“Your father.”
Nobody moved.
Again.
But this time, the silence felt different.
Because we had spent days believing we were fighting one person.
Agnes.
But we were wrong.
May you like
The entire time...
She had never been alone.
