Chapter 12 - THE LAST LIE

Edward walked slowly into the room.
Every step carried twenty years of pain.
Twenty years of regret.
Twenty years of believing the wrong people.
Richard smiled.
“There he is.”
Edward looked at him.
“You ruined my family.”
Richard laughed.
“No, Edward.”
He pointed the gun.
“Your family ruined itself.”
Sarah stepped forward.
“You’re a liar.”
Richard looked at her.
“You survived because I allowed it.”
Edward’s expression changed.
“What?”
Richard smiled.
“You were never supposed to leave that hospital.”
Emma grabbed her mother’s hand.
“You’re sick.”
Richard looked at her.
“No.”
He smiled.
“I’m realistic.”
Edward stared at him.
“Why?”
Richard lowered the gun slightly.
“Because your father built everything. The company. The wealth. The reputation.”
He looked around.
“But he never gave me anything.”
“So you destroyed everyone?”
“I took what I deserved.”
Edward shook his head.
“You destroyed innocent people.”
Richard laughed.
“Innocent?”
He pointed at Edward.
“Your father destroyed lives to build that empire.”
Silence.
Edward knew there was truth hidden inside the lie.
His father had made mistakes.
But that didn’t excuse what Richard did.
“You became worse than him.”
Richard’s smile disappeared.
Then suddenly…
Sirens echoed outside.
Richard looked toward the window.
“What?”
Marcus smiled weakly from the doorway.
“You forgot one thing.”
Richard turned.
“What?”
“I’m not just Edward’s investigator.”
Marcus held up his phone.
“I’m working with federal investigators.”
Richard’s face changed.
Every confession.
Every recording.
Every piece of evidence.
Had already been sent.
Victoria looked shocked.
“You knew?”
Marcus nodded.
“We needed everyone in one place.”
Richard looked around.
The person who thought he controlled everyone…
had lost control.
Then he raised the gun.
But before he could react…
Victoria stepped forward.
“Enough.”
Richard looked at her.
“You?”
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“I spent years trying to become someone powerful.”
She looked at Emma.
“And I became a monster.”
She moved between Richard and Emma.
“For once, I’m making the right choice.”
Richard laughed.
“You think they’ll forgive you?”
Victoria looked down.
“No.”
A pause.
“But I need to forgive myself.”
The sound of police entering filled the building.
Richard was finally arrested.
The man who had hidden the truth for decades was finally exposed.
But Edward knew one thing.
The damage could not disappear overnight.
Some wounds needed time.
Especially the wounds caused by family.
Later that night, Edward sat beside Emma.
“I’m sorry.”
Emma looked at him.
“For what?”
“For not seeing what was happening.”
She stayed quiet.
Then slowly held his hand.
“I needed my dad.”
Edward nodded.
“I know.”
“And now?”
He looked at her.
“Now I’m here.”
For the first time in years…
Emma believed him.
But there was still one thing left.
The company.
The inheritance.
And the future they had to rebuild.
May you like
Because surviving the truth was only the beginning.
