Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

The first thing Edward Hayes noticed when he walked into his mansion was not the silence.

It was the sound of his daughter crying.

Not a loud cry.

Not the kind of cry someone makes when they want attention.

It was the quiet, broken sound of someone who had already cried too many times and had given up hoping anyone would hear her.

Edward stopped at the entrance of the marble foyer.

For ten seconds, he couldn’t move.

The most powerful businessman in New York, the man who could buy buildings with a signature and destroy companies with a phone call, stood frozen inside his own home.

Because twenty feet away…

His twenty-two-year-old daughter was on her knees scrubbing the floor.

Wearing a maid uniform.

Barefoot.

Her hands red and swollen.

Her face covered with tears.

“Emma?”

His voice came out like a whisper.

The young woman froze.

The cloth in her hand stopped moving.

Slowly, she lifted her head.

And when she saw her father standing there, her eyes widened with pure fear.

Not relief.

Not happiness.

Fear.

That was the moment Edward knew something was terribly wrong.

“Dad…”

Her voice cracked.

One word.

That was all it took.

Edward looked around the room.

The giant crystal chandelier above them.

The expensive artwork on the walls.

The luxurious furniture.

Everything in that mansion represented success.

Everything except his daughter.

She looked like someone who had been trapped inside it.

“What is this?” Edward asked.

No one answered.

Then a sharp voice came from behind him.

“Edward, you’re home early.”

Victoria Hayes walked down the staircase slowly, holding a glass of red wine.

She was elegant.

Perfect.

Her blonde hair was styled beautifully.

Her designer dress probably cost more than most people earned in a year.

She smiled as if nothing unusual was happening.

“This is just a misunderstanding.”

Edward turned around.

“Misunderstanding?”

His voice became colder.

“My daughter is on the floor wearing a maid uniform, and you’re telling me it’s a misunderstanding?”

Victoria laughed nervously.

“Emma insisted on helping around the house. You know how emotional she can be.”

Emma immediately lowered her eyes.

Edward noticed.

His daughter never looked away from people.

Not before.

Not when she was younger.

Something had changed.

“What happened to your hands?” he asked.

Emma quickly pulled them behind her back.

“Nothing.”

“Emma.”

“I said nothing, Dad.”

But her voice betrayed her.

She was scared.

Edward looked at Victoria.

And for the first time in years, he didn’t see the woman he married.

He saw someone hiding something.

“Leave the room,” he said.

Victoria blinked.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

The smile disappeared from her face.

“Edward, don’t embarrass me in my own home.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Your home?”

The words hung in the air.

Because everyone knew the truth.

The mansion belonged to Edward.

The money belonged to Edward.

The empire belonged to Edward.

Victoria only had power because he gave it to her.

And suddenly, she realized that power was slipping away.

“You’re overreacting,” she said.

“No.”

Edward stepped closer.

“I’m finally seeing clearly.”

Emma looked at her father.

For the first time in months, she wanted to believe she was safe.

But before Edward could say another word…

Victoria’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

And her entire expression changed.

Fear flashed across her face.

Edward noticed.

“Who is it?”

Victoria quickly turned the phone away.

“No one.”

But Edward had already seen the name.

A name he recognized.

A name connected to secrets from his own past.

And before anyone could speak…

A message appeared on Victoria’s phone.

One sentence.

One sentence that made Edward’s blood run cold.

“She knows the truth about what happened to her mother.”

Edward looked at Emma.

Then at Victoria.

Because suddenly, this was no longer about a maid uniform.

This was about a secret someone had killed to protect.

And his daughter was standing in the middle of it.
