Chapter 7 - The Night They Came For Maya

Victoria always believed money could solve problems.

A better lawyer.

More security.

More resources.

More power.

But that night, she learned something important.

Money could open doors.

It could buy protection.

It could build walls around a person.

But it could not stop someone who had already decided to destroy everything.

The safe house was located outside Madrid.

A quiet place surrounded by trees.

No neighbors.

No cameras visible from the road.

Only a small team Victoria personally trusted.

For the first time in days, Maya seemed calm.

She sat on the floor with Charlie, drawing pictures.

Victoria watched from the doorway.

The drawing was simple.

A house.

A woman.

A little girl.

And a dog.

Victoria smiled.

“Is that us?”

Maya looked up.

“Yes.”

Victoria pointed at the drawing.

“And who is this?”

Maya looked at the woman.

“That’s my mom.”

Victoria’s smile disappeared.

Even after everything…

Maya still included Isabella.

“She’s always with me.”

Victoria sat beside her.

“I think she would be proud of you.”

Maya looked at her.

“Did you love my mom?”

Victoria looked down.

“Yes.”

“Then why did you leave her?”

The question came quietly.

But it hurt deeply.

Victoria took a long breath.

“Because I was wrong.”

Maya waited.

“I thought I knew what happened.”

“And you didn’t?”

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

The room became silent.

“I should have searched harder.”

Maya held her drawing.

“My mom said people make mistakes.”

Victoria looked surprised.

“She said that?”

Maya nodded.

“But she also said good people fix them.”

Those words stayed with Victoria.

Because that was exactly what she was trying to do.

Fix a mistake that had lasted ten years.

At midnight, Charlie suddenly lifted his head.

The dog growled.

Victoria immediately noticed.

“What is it?”

Charlie walked toward the window.

His ears were raised.

The security guard checked the cameras.

“Nothing outside.”

Victoria didn’t relax.

Animals noticed things humans missed.

“Check again.”

The guard looked carefully.

Then froze.

“Ms. Harrington…”

“What?”

“There’s a problem.”

“What problem?”

The guard turned the monitor toward her.

The camera footage showed the driveway.

Empty.

But something was wrong.

The gate was open.

Victoria stood up.

“How?”

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

The security system had not been damaged.

The gate had been unlocked.

From inside.

Victoria grabbed Maya’s hand.

“Come with me.”

Maya looked scared.

“What happened?”

“Stay close.”

The lights suddenly turned off.

Darkness filled the house.

Maya grabbed Victoria’s arm.

“Victoria…”

“I’m here.”

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone who wasn’t afraid.

Victoria whispered:

“Everyone stay quiet.”

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“Still protecting other people’s children, Victoria?”

Her blood froze.

Adrian.

The emergency lights turned on.

He stood at the end of the hallway.

Wearing a black coat.

Completely calm.

Like he owned the place.

Victoria stepped in front of Maya.

“You’re not taking her.”

Adrian smiled.

“You still don’t understand.”

“Understand what?”

He looked at Maya.

“That girl was never supposed to find you.”

Maya hid behind Victoria.

Adrian took one step forward.

Victoria’s security team raised their weapons.

“Stop.”

Adrian laughed.

“You think guns scare me?”

Victoria stared.

“What do you want?”

Adrian looked at Maya.

“The truth.”

Victoria frowned.

“You already know the truth.”

“No.”

His smile disappeared.

“I know what Isabella wanted me to know.”

He looked directly at Victoria.

“But I don’t know what she told her daughter.”

Maya started shaking.

Victoria noticed.

Adrian noticed too.

And that scared Victoria more than anything.

Because Maya wasn’t afraid of him.

She was afraid of what she remembered.

Suddenly, Charlie jumped forward.

The dog attacked Adrian’s arm.

Adrian shouted and stepped back.

Security moved instantly.

But Adrian was faster.

He pulled something from his pocket.

A small device.

The lights exploded.

Smoke filled the hallway.

Everyone coughed.

Victoria grabbed Maya.

“Run!”

They moved toward the back exit.

But before they reached the door…

Maya stopped.

Victoria looked back.

“What happened?”

The girl was staring at the floor.

There was a small object lying there.

A necklace.

Not hers.

A necklace she recognized.

“My mom had that.”

Victoria picked it up.

Her face changed.

May you like

Because engraved on the back were four words.

“I’M STILL ALIVE.”
