Chapter 10 - The Secret Inside The Silver Necklace

The farmhouse shook with every gunshot.
Glass fell from the windows.
The lights flickered.
Maya screamed.
Victoria pulled her close.
“Stay down.”
The little girl grabbed Victoria’s jacket.
“Are they going to take me?”
Victoria looked into her terrified eyes.
“No.”
Her voice was calm.
But inside…
She was terrified.
Because for the first time in her life, Victoria Harrington had something she could not lose.
Not a company.
Not money.
Not power.
A child.
A child who trusted her.
Isabella crawled toward the old wooden cabinet.
“Victoria.”
“What?”
“Take Maya and go to the basement.”
Victoria looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because they’re not here for me.”
Another gunshot hit the wall.
“They’re here for her.”
Victoria refused.
“I’m not leaving you.”
Isabella looked at her.
The same determined expression she had ten years ago.
“Please.”
A pause.
“For once in your life, trust me.”
Those words hurt.
Because Victoria remembered.
Ten years ago, Isabella had said the same thing.
And Victoria didn’t listen.
This time…
She did.
Victoria grabbed Maya’s hand.
“Come on.”
Daniel followed.
Behind them, Isabella stayed upstairs.
Waiting.
The basement was hidden behind an old wall.
Daniel moved a shelf.
A secret door appeared.
Victoria looked shocked.
“You knew about this?”
Isabella shook her head.
“No.”
She had followed them.
“I built it.”
Victoria turned.
“Why?”
Isabella looked at Maya.
“Because a mother always prepares for the worst.”
The door closed.
They stood in darkness.
Above them…
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Someone entered the farmhouse.
A man’s voice echoed.
“Isabella.”
Everyone froze.
Adrian.
“You know you can’t hide forever.”
Victoria clenched her fists.
Then another voice answered.
A voice she didn’t recognize.
The room became silent.
Adrian sounded nervous.
“I followed your instructions.”
The other man laughed.
“And yet the girl is still alive.”
Victoria looked at Isabella.
She understood.
Adrian wasn’t the boss.
He was only a servant.
Minutes passed.
Then Isabella whispered:
“There is something Maya needs to know.”
Victoria looked confused.
“What?”
Isabella looked at her daughter.
“When I gave you that necklace…”
Maya touched it.
“I told you never to remove it.”
Maya nodded.
“Why?”
Isabella took a deep breath.
“Because it contains a key.”
Victoria frowned.
“A key?”
Isabella nodded.
“Not a normal key.”
She looked at Victoria.
“A digital key.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“What does it unlock?”
Isabella answered:
“Proof.”
Silence.
“Proof of everything they did.”
Victoria realized.
The necklace wasn’t valuable because of the jewelry.
It was valuable because of what was hidden inside.
A secret.
A secret powerful people had killed to protect.
Suddenly…
The basement door shook.
Someone was trying to open it.
Maya grabbed Victoria’s hand.
“Don’t let them take me.”
Victoria looked at her.
And without hesitation…
She made a promise.
“They won’t.”
The door cracked.
A shadow appeared.
May you like
Then a voice whispered:
“Found you.”
