Chapter 13 - Isabella’s Final Letter

Three weeks had passed since the night Alexander Harrington was arrested.
For the first time in years…
Victoria slept without checking the locks.
Without looking over her shoulder.
Without wondering who was watching.
The truth had finally come out.
The evidence Isabella collected exposed years of financial crimes, hidden deals, and betrayals.
People who once appeared untouchable were now facing the consequences of their actions.
But Victoria didn’t care about headlines.
She didn’t care about interviews.
She only cared about one person.
Maya.
The little girl who had entered her life asking for leftovers…
Was now sitting at the kitchen table eating pancakes.
A normal child.
Laughing.
Smiling.
Arguing with Charlie because he kept trying to steal her food.
Victoria watched from the doorway.
And for the first time in ten years…
She felt peace.
“Victoria?”
She looked up.
Maya was holding a small envelope.
“What is that?”
“The letter.”
Victoria froze.
The letter.
The one Isabella left behind.
The one addressed to Maya.
She sat down.
Maya placed it on the table.
“My mom wanted me to read it when everything was safe.”
Victoria looked at the envelope.
Isabella’s handwriting was still there.
The same handwriting she remembered from old birthday cards.
The same handwriting that once filled her office with ideas and dreams.
Victoria took a breath.
“Are you ready?”
Maya nodded.
Together, they opened it.
Inside was one page.
Only one.
Maya began reading.
My little Maya,
If you are reading this, it means you survived.
And if you survived, it means you were stronger than I ever imagined.
Maya stopped.
Her eyes filled with tears.
Victoria placed a hand on her shoulder.
She continued.
I am sorry for every night you spent alone.
I am sorry for every moment you wondered why I left.
But I need you to know one thing.
I never left because I stopped loving you.
I left because I loved you too much to let them find you.
Maya covered her mouth.
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
The letter continued.
Victoria,
If you are reading this, I need you to hear something important.
Maya doesn’t need someone to save her anymore.
She needs someone to love her.
Victoria looked away.
Her eyes became wet.
You always believed you weren’t enough.
You blamed yourself for losing me.
But I knew something you didn’t.
You had the biggest heart of anyone I ever knew.
That little girl found you because I trusted the person you became.
Victoria couldn’t hold back her tears.
Maya reached for her hand.
Please don’t let guilt decide your future.
Choose love.
Nobody spoke.
For several minutes…
Only Maya’s quiet crying filled the room.
Then she looked at Victoria.
“Did my mom really trust you?”
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Victoria smiled sadly.
“Because she knew me better than I knew myself.”
Maya moved closer.
“Then I trust you too.”
Those words broke something inside Victoria.
Something she had protected for years.
She hugged Maya.
And this time…
She didn’t let go.
That evening, Victoria received a phone call.
Daniel.
“Victoria.”
She immediately noticed his voice.
“What happened?”
“We found something else.”
Her heart sank.
“What?”
“A file Alexander tried to destroy.”
“What’s inside?”
Daniel paused.
“Your father’s original will.”
Victoria frowned.
“My father’s will was already settled.”
“No.”
Daniel sounded serious.
“It wasn’t complete.”
Victoria looked toward Maya.
“What do you mean?”
Daniel answered:
“Your father left something behind.”
“What?”
“A message.”
Victoria stood still.
“What message?”
May you like
Daniel lowered his voice.
“About Maya.”
