Chapter 5 - THE TRUTH BEHIND THE SMILE

Nobody spoke.

The video continued playing.

Celeste looked at the screen like she had forgotten how to breathe.

Julian turned slowly.

“Who is that man?”

She didn’t answer.

“Mara almost went to jail.”

Celeste finally reacted.

“You don’t understand.”

Julian laughed quietly.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I understand perfectly.”

Celeste’s eyes filled with anger.

“You’re choosing a maid over me?”

Mara flinched.

There it was.

The real Celeste.

Not the elegant woman from magazines.

Not the perfect fiancée.

The woman who believed some people mattered more than others.

Julian looked disappointed.

“That’s what you think this is about?”

Celeste said nothing.

Julian walked closer.

“It’s about trust.”

The mansion doors suddenly opened.

A man in a dark suit entered.

“Mr. Vale.”

Julian turned.

“What?”

The man handed him a folder.

“We found something else.”

Julian opened it.

His expression changed.

Mara watched carefully.

“What is it?”

Julian looked at her.

Then at Celeste.

“Your mother.”

Mara froze.

“My mother?”

The folder contained old documents.

Photographs.

Records.

And one name.

Anna Ellison.

Julian’s voice became quiet.

“My family was told she disappeared fifteen years ago.”

Mara stared.

“She didn’t disappear.”

“No.”

Julian looked at the papers.

“Someone made sure nobody found her.”

The room became cold.

Mara’s hands shook.

“What are you saying?”

Julian looked toward Celeste.

Because Celeste was no longer pretending.

She was scared.

Very scared.

Then Julian said the words that changed Mara’s entire life.

“Your mother wasn’t just connected to my family.”

A pause.

“She was trying to expose someone inside it.”

Mara looked at Celeste.

And Celeste looked back.

For the first time…

Mara saw the truth.

Celeste wasn’t afraid of being recognized.

She was afraid Mara would remember.
