Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE INVISIBLE

Celeste recovered quickly.

That was always her talent.

She could fall apart inside and still look flawless outside.

She laughed softly.

“Julian, don’t make this dramatic.”

Several guests smiled nervously.

They wanted to believe her.

People like Celeste survived because powerful people preferred comfortable lies over uncomfortable truths.

Julian leaned back.

“I asked a simple question.”

Celeste touched his arm.

“She’s just a staff member.”

Mara lowered her eyes.

She had learned something a long time ago.

When wealthy people wanted to win, they changed the story.

They didn’t argue facts.

They changed how people saw them.

Julian looked at Mara.

“Take the scarf off.”

The room became silent.

Mara hesitated.

She looked toward Celeste.

A mistake.

Julian noticed.

“Did she tell you not to?”

Mara didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Celeste stepped forward.

“Julian, this is ridiculous.”

“No.”

His voice remained calm.

“That’s what makes it interesting.”

Mara slowly removed the scarf.

The room reacted immediately.

Not loudly.

But enough.

A few older guests looked surprised.

One woman whispered.

“I know her.”

Mara’s stomach dropped.

Julian heard it.

“From where?”

The woman looked uncomfortable.

“I’m not sure.”

Celeste immediately interrupted.

“People see faces everywhere.”

But Julian wasn’t looking at Celeste anymore.

He was looking at Mara.

“Your name?”

“Mara Ellison.”

The billionaire repeated it quietly.

“Mara Ellison…”

Something flashed in his eyes.

Recognition.

Not from the mansion.

From somewhere else.

“You used to model.”

Mara said nothing.

Celeste’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Julian saw.

“You knew?”

Celeste smiled.

“Everyone knew.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

The tension grew.

Mara felt trapped between them.

She hated being the center of attention.

She didn’t want revenge.

She didn’t want to expose anyone.

She just wanted to work.

But sometimes, the truth doesn’t stay quiet because someone deserves peace.

Sometimes, it comes out because someone gets careless.

The little girl beside Julian looked at Mara.

“I like your necklace.”

Mara touched the small silver locket around her neck.

It was old.

Simple.

The only thing she had left from her mother.

“Thank you.”

The girl smiled.

“My mom had one like that.”

Mara looked surprised.

“Really?”

The child nodded.

“She said it was special because it belonged to someone she loved.”

Julian suddenly became still.

“Show me the necklace.”

Mara frowned.

“Why?”

“Please.”

Something about his voice made her stop.

She removed the locket.

Julian looked at it.

And the color disappeared from his face.

Because carved into the silver was a symbol he knew.

A symbol connected to a secret his family had buried for fifteen years.

A symbol Celeste had never expected anyone to see.

May you like

Julian whispered:

“Where did you get this?”
