Chapter 11 - THE UNCLE WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

The hallway remained silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Julian stared at the man standing in front of him.
“Uncle Richard…”
The older man smiled.
A calm, almost friendly smile.
The same smile he had shown investors.
The same smile he had shown reporters.
The same smile that had convinced everyone he was the loyal family member who helped rebuild Vale Industries.
But Mara saw something different.
A man who had been caught.
“You look surprised,” Richard said.
Julian’s voice was low.
“You were supposed to be in London.”
Richard laughed softly.
“People believe what they are told.”
The words felt familiar.
Too familiar.
Mara looked at Julian.
“He’s the one?”
Julian didn’t answer.
He didn’t have to.
Richard walked into the hallway holding the old file.
“I spent fifteen years protecting this family.”
Mara stepped forward.
“Protecting?”
Her voice shook.
“You destroyed my mother’s life.”
Richard looked at her.
Not with anger.
With curiosity.
“So you’re Anna’s daughter.”
The way he said it made Mara’s skin crawl.
“You knew who I was?”
Richard smiled.
“I knew the moment I saw the locket.”
Julian’s face changed.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
The billionaire took a step forward.
“Then why didn’t you say anything?”
Richard looked at him.
“Because I wanted to know how much your father had told you.”
Julian clenched his jaw.
“My father is dead.”
“Yes.”
Richard looked around the mansion.
“But his mistakes are still alive.”
Mara felt confused.
“What happened to my mother?”
Richard looked at the old folder.
“She was smarter than everyone thought.”
Julian’s voice became colder.
“Answer her.”
Richard sighed.
“Your mother discovered that my brother was moving company money through hidden accounts.”
Mara swallowed.
“And you helped him?”
A long pause.
Then Richard said:
“I helped the family.”
Julian looked disgusted.
“That’s what you call it?”
Richard ignored him.
“Your mother threatened to expose everything.”
“She was going to tell the truth,” Mara said.
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
“And you stopped her.”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“I gave her a choice.”
Mara stepped back.
“What choice?”
“She could disappear quietly…”
His eyes moved toward the locket.
“Or she could lose everything.”
Julian’s hands tightened.
“You threatened her.”
Richard smiled.
“You still don’t understand how this world works.”
That sentence made Mara angry.
Because it was the same excuse Celeste had used.
The same belief.
The rich could decide what happened to everyone else.
Julian looked at Richard.
“Where is the evidence?”
Richard lifted the folder.
“Right here.”
Mara stared.
The entire truth was inside that file.
The reason her mother disappeared.
The reason her family suffered.
The reason Celeste had been afraid all these years.
Julian reached forward.
But Richard pulled it away.
“Not so fast.”
“What do you want?”
Richard looked at him.
“The company.”
Julian froze.
“You already have shares.”
“I want control.”
Mara understood.
This was never just about hiding a secret.
It was about power.
Richard smiled.
“And there’s one more problem.”
Julian frowned.
“What?”
Richard looked at Mara.
“Your mother left something behind.”
Mara’s heart stopped.
“What?”
Richard stepped closer.
“A backup.”
Julian stared.
“Where?”
Richard smiled.
“That’s the question you should have asked fifteen years ago.”
Then he dropped the folder onto the floor.
The pages scattered.
Except one.
Richard picked it up.
And burned it with a lighter.
Mara screamed:
“Stop!”
But it was too late.
The final piece of evidence turned into ash.
May you like
Richard smiled.
“Now you’ll never know the whole truth.”
