Chapter 12 - THE FILE THAT SURVIVED

Mara stood frozen.

The smell of burning paper filled the hallway.

For years, she had imagined the moment she discovered the truth about her mother.

She imagined answers.

Closure.

Peace.

She never imagined watching another person destroy the last pieces of her past.

Julian immediately grabbed the remaining documents from the floor.

Richard laughed.

“You think those matter?”

Julian looked up.

“You’re finished.”

Richard smiled.

“No.”

He walked toward the door.

“I’m the only reason this family still has power.”

“You’re the reason it almost collapsed.”

Richard stopped.

For the first time, anger appeared on his face.

“You have no idea what your father did to survive.”

Julian’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?”

Richard looked at Mara.

Then back at Julian.

“Ask your mother.”

Julian froze.

“My mother died.”

“Yes.”

Richard smiled.

“But she knew.”

The words stayed in the air.

Then Richard walked away.

Nobody stopped him.

Because everyone was trying to understand what had just happened.

Later that night, Julian and Mara sat in the private office.

The room was quiet.

Mara looked exhausted.

“I thought finding the truth would make me feel better.”

Julian looked at her.

“It doesn’t.”

She shook her head.

“It feels worse.”

Julian understood.

Because sometimes answers don’t heal wounds.

Sometimes they show you how deep the wounds really are.

Suddenly, Julian’s phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

He opened it.

His face changed.

“What?”

Mara looked at him.

“What happened?”

Julian turned the phone around.

A picture.

A hidden room inside the old Vale family estate.

And a message underneath:

Your mother kept a copy. She trusted the wrong person.

Mara stood.

“Who sent that?”

Julian checked the number.

“No name.”

Then another message arrived.

This time with a video.

Julian pressed play.

The screen showed an old recording.

A woman sitting in a dark room.

Mara stopped breathing.

Because she knew that voice.

Her mother.

Anna Ellison.

The recording began.

“If you are watching this…”

A tear fell down Mara’s face.

Her mother continued:

“Then I failed to protect you.”

Mara covered her mouth.

“No…”

Anna looked directly into the camera.

“But there is one thing you need to know.”

The video glitched.

The screen went black.

Then one final sentence appeared:

The person who betrayed me is the person you trust most.

Julian and Mara looked at each other.

Because suddenly they realized something terrifying.

Richard might not have been the only person hiding the truth.

May you like

Someone else had been protecting the secret.

Someone much closer.
