Chapter 14 - THE TRUTH ANNA LEFT BEHIND

Mara ran.

She didn’t remember crossing the mansion.

She only remembered one thing.

Her sister.

Emily stood inside the old east wing.

A security team surrounded her.

“Mara!”

Mara grabbed her.

“Are you okay?”

Emily nodded.

“I’m fine.”

Then she pointed toward the hidden room.

“I found this behind a wall.”

Inside was a small wooden box.

Nothing expensive.

Nothing impressive.

But everyone stared at it like it contained the entire world.

Julian carefully opened it.

Inside were letters.

A flash drive.

And one final photograph.

Mara picked up the photograph.

Her mother.

Standing beside someone.

Someone she never expected.

Julian looked over her shoulder.

His face changed.

“Impossible.”

Mara looked at him.

“Who is that?”

Julian whispered:

“My mother.”

Everyone became silent.

Anna Ellison.

Julian’s mother.

And Richard’s accusations suddenly made sense.

The secret was bigger than corruption.

Bigger than money.

Mara opened the first letter.

Her mother’s handwriting filled the page.

Mara, if you are reading this, I’m sorry I wasn’t there to explain everything.

Her hands shook.

The Vale family was not the only family hiding secrets.

She continued.

Julian’s mother tried to expose Richard before I did. She was my ally.

Mara looked at Julian.

His eyes were full of shock.

The story everyone believed was wrong.

Richard had spent fifteen years controlling the narrative.

Making everyone believe certain people were enemies.

But the truth was different.

Mara continued reading.

Richard knew we were working together. He tried to destroy the evidence.

A second letter fell out.

This one was addressed to Julian.

He opened it.

His mother’s words.

My son, if you ever discover this, remember one thing. Power without honesty destroys everything it touches.

Julian closed his eyes.

The room remained silent.

Then the flash drive was connected.

A video appeared.

Richard.

Fifteen years younger.

Talking to someone.

Everyone leaned closer.

Then the second person appeared.

Mara stopped breathing.

Because she recognized him.

Not from her memories.

From the newspapers.

The respected businessman.

The family friend.

The man who had been helping Julian rebuild Vale Industries.

Julian whispered:

“No…”

Mara looked at him.

“Who is it?”

Julian’s face turned pale.

“My father’s lawyer.”

The man who had spent years protecting the family.

The man who had helped hide the truth.

The video continued.

And his voice filled the room.

“You take care of Anna.”

Richard nodded.

“And the girl?”

The lawyer smiled.

“She will never know.”

Mara covered her mouth.

The truth was finally revealed.

But there was one problem.

The lawyer was still alive.

And he knew they had found the evidence.
