Chapter 1 - THE SCARF THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

“Cover your face.”

Mara Ellison froze with a champagne tray in her hands.

For a second, she thought she had heard wrong.

The loud music from the ballroom behind the closed doors covered most sounds, but Celeste Ashford’s voice was clear.

Cold.

Demanding.

“Put it on.”

Celeste held out an expensive ivory silk scarf like she was offering a gift.

Mara stared at it.

“You want me to wear that while serving dinner?”

Celeste looked around the empty service hallway before stepping closer.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The question was simple.

But Celeste’s expression changed.

That was when Mara knew something was wrong.

People usually didn’t react that way when they had nothing to hide.

Celeste lowered her voice.

“Because tonight is important.”

Mara almost laughed.

Important.

That was the word rich people used when they wanted everyone else to sacrifice something.

Tonight was important because forty of New York’s most powerful families were inside the Vale mansion celebrating Celeste’s engagement to billionaire Julian Vale.

Tonight was important because every camera, every newspaper reporter, and every business partner was watching.

Tonight was important because Celeste wanted the world to see perfection.

And Mara?

Mara was just supposed to disappear in the background.

“I’m working,” Mara said firmly.

“I can’t cover my face and carry dishes.”

Celeste’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.”

Mara looked at the woman standing in front of her.

Eleven years ago, they had stood beside each other in the same modeling studio.

Same dream.

Same ambition.

Back then, Celeste smiled beautifully for cameras.

But behind those smiles, she knew exactly how to destroy competition.

A photographer once told Mara she had the natural confidence Celeste could never copy.

Two weeks later, Mara mysteriously lost her biggest contract.

She never proved Celeste had anything to do with it.

But she remembered.

She always remembered.

And now, years later, fate had placed them in the same mansion again.

Only this time, one woman wore diamonds.

The other wore a maid’s uniform.

“You know who I am,” Mara whispered.

Celeste smiled.

“That’s exactly the problem.”

Mara’s eyebrows tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Celeste looked toward the ballroom.

“People remember beautiful faces.”

The words landed heavily.

Mara understood.

Celeste wasn’t afraid of a maid.

She was afraid of someone recognizing her.

“You think someone here knows me?”

“I think you should stop asking questions.”

Mara felt anger rising.

“I’m not ashamed of working here.”

“I didn’t say you should be.”

“You didn’t have to.”

For a moment, neither woman spoke.

Then Celeste stepped closer.

“Your sister’s tuition payment is due soon, right?”

Mara’s face changed.

That was enough.

Celeste noticed.

“You really should be careful about who you challenge.”

Mara’s hands tightened around the tray.

“You’re threatening me?”

“No.”

Celeste smiled.

“I’m reminding you how the world works.”

The cruelest part was that Mara knew she was right.

Her sister Emily had worked so hard to get into college.

Mara had promised their mother before she died that she would protect Emily’s future.

This job paid for that promise.

Losing it wasn’t an option.

Slowly, Mara took the scarf.

She covered her hair and part of her face.

Celeste smiled with satisfaction.

“Good choice.”

Mara said nothing.

She walked into the ballroom.

The room was everything she expected.

Crystal chandeliers.

Luxury gowns.

Men discussing billion-dollar deals over expensive wine.

Everyone looked perfect.

Nobody looked real.

Mara moved quietly between the tables.

Until she reached Julian Vale.

The billionaire everyone came to see.

He was younger than most people expected.

Thirty-six.

Calm.

Sharp.

The kind of man who didn’t need to raise his voice to control a room.

Mara leaned forward to refill his water glass.

And Julian stopped speaking.

His eyes lifted.

Straight to hers.

The room continued moving.

But he stopped.

“What happened to your face?”

Mara froze.

Before she could answer, Celeste immediately smiled.

“She had a cosmetic procedure.”

Julian looked at his fiancée.

“Did she?”

Celeste’s smile weakened.

“Yes.”

But Julian didn’t look convinced.

Then a small voice came from the other side of the table.

A seven-year-old girl stared at Mara.

“Daddy…”

Everyone turned.

The girl pointed.

“She wasn’t hiding yesterday.”

The entire table went silent.

Mara’s heart stopped.

Julian slowly placed his glass down.

His eyes moved from the child…

to Celeste…

then back to Mara.

“Who told you to wear that scarf?”

Nobody answered.

But everyone already knew the question wasn’t really for Mara.

May you like

It was for Celeste.

And Celeste realized her perfect night had just cracked.
