Chapter 6 - THE TEST THAT COULD DESTROY EVERYTHING

The next morning, I woke up with one thought.
I needed proof.
Not suspicion.
Not emotions.
Proof.
Because accusations against my mother required more than anger.
They required evidence.
My entire life had been built around facts.
Contracts.
Documents.
Numbers.
And now the biggest truth of my life was hidden inside a family secret.
I looked at the four boys sleeping in my guest room.
Four children who should have grown up knowing their father.
Four children who lost six years because adults made decisions for them.
I promised myself something.
I would never let anyone control their lives again.
Mara found me in the kitchen.
“You didn’t sleep.”
“No.”
“Neither did I.”
For a moment, we just stood there.
Like strangers who remembered loving each other.
“I’m sorry.”
The words surprised her.
“For what?”
“For believing you left.”
Her eyes softened.
“You were lied to.”
“I still believed it.”
She looked down.
“That hurt the most.”
I nodded.
“I know.”
“No.”
“You don’t.”
Her voice cracked.
“You had six years of anger.”
“I had six years of wondering why the man I loved never came looking for his children.”
I had no answer.
Because there was none.
I should have searched harder.
I should have questioned the story.
I should have fought.
Instead, I accepted the easiest explanation.
And four children paid the price.
Later that morning, I arranged a private DNA test.
Mara agreed.
Not because she doubted me.
Because we needed undeniable proof.
The world would question everything.
My family.
The media.
Brielle.
The board.
Everyone.
Three days later, the results arrived.
I opened the envelope with shaking hands.
Mara stood beside me.
The boys were playing in the next room.
I read the first line.
PATERNITY CONFIRMED.
I closed my eyes.
For six years, I had been a father without knowing.
I laughed quietly.
Then tears came.
Not because I was sad.
Because I finally understood what I lost.
Six birthdays.
Six Christmas mornings.
Six years of bedtime stories.
Six years I could never get back.
Mara watched me.
“I’m sorry.”
I looked at her.
“Don’t.”
“You didn’t take those years from me.”
“Someone else did.”
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?”
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Adrian Whitaker.”
“Yes?”
“You finally found them.”
My blood went cold.
“Who is this?”
“You don’t remember me.”
“Should I?”
“I was there the night Mara disappeared.”
I stood up.
“Who are you?”
The woman laughed softly.
“A person who knows the truth about your mother.”
I looked at Mara.
She immediately understood something was wrong.
“What truth?”
The woman continued.
“Your mother didn’t just separate you from Mara.”
“She tried to erase someone else too.”
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Who?”
A pause.
Then the woman whispered:
“Your first child.”
My entire body froze.
“What?”
Mara’s face turned pale.
The woman continued.
“The four boys are not the only secret your family buried.”
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Unable to move.
Unable to speak.
Because one terrifying question entered my mind.
May you like
If my mother was willing to hide four children…
What else had she destroyed?
