Chapter 11 - THE GIRL WITH MY EYES

The address my investigator gave me belonged to a small house outside the city.
Nothing about it looked powerful.
Nothing about it looked connected to the Whitaker family.
That was probably why it worked.
The people who hide secrets never put them somewhere obvious.
Mara sat beside me in the car.
Neither of us spoke.
For the first time in days…
We were both afraid of what we might find.
“What if she hates us?”
Mara’s question surprised me.
I looked at her.
“What?”
“Our daughter.”
The word sounded impossible.
“She may think we abandoned her.”
My chest tightened.
Because I knew that pain.
I lived with it.
I spent six years believing Mara left me.
What if our child spent her entire life believing the same thing?
“We’ll explain.”
“What if she doesn’t believe us?”
I looked at the house.
“Then we spend the rest of our lives proving it.”
We walked to the door.
A woman answered.
She was older.
Holding a photograph.
The moment she saw Mara…
Her face changed.
“You found her.”
My heart stopped.
“You know who we are?”
The woman nodded.
“I was waiting.”
“Waiting for what?”
“For the truth to finally come.”
She stepped aside.
Inside the house was a teenage girl.
Six years old.
Sitting near the window.
Drawing.
She looked up.
And everything inside me broke.
Because she had my eyes.
My daughter.
The girl I never knew existed.
Her name was Lily.
The woman who raised her explained everything.
“Your mother came to me six years ago.”
“She told me the child’s parents were dangerous.”
“She told me she was protecting the baby.”
My fists tightened.
“She lied.”
“Yes.”
“She told me if I ever revealed the truth, Lily would be taken away.”
Mara stepped closer.
Lily looked at her carefully.
“Who are you?”
Mara started crying.
“I’m your mother.”
The girl froze.
“No.”
The word was quiet.
But painful.
Mara stopped.
“I’m sorry.”
“You’re not my mother.”
My heart broke.
“Lily…”
She looked at me.
“And you?”
I couldn’t speak.
Because I didn’t know how to introduce myself.
A stranger.
A father.
A person who missed her entire childhood.
“I’m Adrian.”
She stared.
“Why are you here?”
I swallowed.
“Because I should have been here a long time ago.”
Her eyes filled with confusion.
The woman who raised her stepped forward.
“She deserves the truth.”
Lily looked at her.
“What truth?”
The woman took a deep breath.
“Your real parents were looking for you.”
“They never abandoned you.”
Lily looked between us.
“Then why didn’t they come?”
No answer.
Because the answer was painful.
Someone stopped us.
Someone stole those years.
That evening, Lily came with us.
Not because everything was fixed.
It wasn’t.
Because trust could not be rebuilt in one day.
But she agreed to meet her brothers.
When we arrived home, the boys were waiting.
The moment they saw her…
They froze.
Milo whispered:
“She looks like Dad.”
I almost smiled.
“Yes.”
Micah stepped closer.
“Who is she?”
I looked at Lily.
Then said the words I never thought I would say.
“She’s your sister.”
The boys stared.
Then looked at each other.
And suddenly the room filled with questions.
But before anyone could answer…
The lights went out.
Every screen in the apartment turned on.
One message appeared.
STOP LOOKING FOR THE CHILDREN.
Mara grabbed my hand.
Because we both understood.
May you like
Someone was watching us.
Someone who was terrified of what we were about to discover.
