Chapter 12 - THE LAST PERSON WE EXPECTED

The message stayed on every screen.

STOP LOOKING FOR THE CHILDREN.

Nobody moved.

Not even the boys.

They were old enough to understand fear.

They knew something was wrong.

I immediately called security.

No answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

That was impossible.

My security team never ignored my calls.

Then my phone received a video.

One file.

One message.

WATCH BEFORE YOU CONTINUE.

I pressed play.

The video showed my mother.

Sitting alone in a room.

She looked different.

Older.

Exhausted.

Not the powerful woman who controlled every room she entered.

“I know you found Lily.”

I froze.

“She was never supposed to return.”

Mara grabbed my arm.

The video continued.

“I know you hate me.”

“I know you believe I destroyed your life.”

A pause.

“But you don’t know the entire truth.”

I almost turned it off.

Then she said something that stopped me.

“Your father was not the only one who tried to protect you.”

I stared.

“What?”

The video continued.

“The night Mara disappeared…”

“She was not my only target.”

“She was not even the first.”

My breathing became heavier.

“Someone else inside this family was controlling everything.”

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“Someone you trust.”

The screen went black.

A second message appeared.

NOT YOUR MOTHER.

SOMEONE CLOSER.

I looked around the room.

Mara.

The children.

My mind raced.

Who could be closer?

Then my phone rang.

Brielle.

I answered.

“Adrian.”

Her voice sounded broken.

“We need to talk.”

“No.”

“Please.”

“I know everything.”

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“No.”

“You know some of it.”

I froze.

“What does that mean?”

“I didn’t do everything.”

“But I know who did.”

My anger returned.

“Why should I believe you?”

“Because they’re coming for me too.”

The call ended.

Seconds later, there was a knock on the door.

Everyone froze.

My security finally appeared.

But they weren’t alone.

Brielle stood between them.

Her face was pale.

She looked terrified.

Mara stepped forward.

“You.”

Brielle looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

Mara laughed bitterly.

“Sorry?”

“You helped destroy my life.”

“I know.”

“You helped take my children.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you here?”

Brielle looked at me.

“Because I finally understand.”

“Your mother wasn’t protecting the family.”

“She was protecting someone else.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

Brielle swallowed.

“The person who started all of this.”

“Who?”

She looked toward the children.

Then whispered:

“Your grandfather.”

The room went silent.

My grandfather.

The man everyone admired.

The founder of the Whitaker empire.

The man who taught me honor.

The man whose portrait hung in every office.

Brielle continued.

“He knew about everything.”

“He ordered your mother to control the situation.”

“He decided who could stay.”

“And who had to disappear.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“But he’s dead.”

Brielle looked at me.

“Are you sure?”

The question sent a chill through the room.

“What are you saying?”

She handed me a folder.

Inside was a document.

A recent photograph.

A signature.

A bank transfer.

And one name.

THOMAS WHITAKER.

Alive.

I stared at the page.

Because the impossible had happened again.

My grandfather…

The man buried seven years ago…

May you like

Was still alive.

And he was the one person who knew every secret.
