Chapter 5 - THE SECRET MY FATHER TOOK TO HIS GRAVE

I stared at the photograph.
My father.
A baby.
Mara.
My mother.
Four people connected by a secret I didn’t understand.
My father died three years ago.
But the picture was taken twenty years earlier.
Before I knew any of these people.
Before my life became a carefully controlled plan.
“Adrian?”
Mara’s voice was nervous.
I handed her the phone.
The second she saw the picture…
She stopped breathing.
“You’ve seen this before.”
It wasn’t a question.
She looked at me.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Before I left.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
“Because your father gave it to me.”
I stared.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“Why would he give you this?”
Mara looked at the boys.
Then back at me.
“Because he knew your mother was hiding something.”
I sat down.
Everything was becoming impossible.
“What does this mean?”
Mara shook her head.
“I don’t know everything.”
“Then tell me what you know.”
She took a deep breath.
“Your father knew your mother was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“Losing control.”
I almost smiled.
“That sounds like her.”
Mara continued.
“Your father told me the Whitaker family had secrets older than both of us.”
“What secrets?”
“He never told me.”
“Why?”
“Because he said knowing too much could make me a target.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“A target?”
“Yes.”
I looked at the photograph again.
My father holding a baby.
“Who is the baby?”
Mara looked away.
“I don’t know.”
That answer bothered me more than anything.
Because Mara always knew more than she admitted.
Before I could question her further, the apartment door opened.
My security team entered.
“Mr. Whitaker.”
“What happened?”
The lead guard looked uncomfortable.
“We found the person who entered your office.”
“Who?”
He handed me a file.
Inside was an identification card.
A former Whitaker employee.
Someone who worked for my father.
“Where is he now?”
“He disappeared.”
“Of course.”
But there was one more thing.
The guard placed an old envelope on the table.
“He left this.”
I opened it.
Inside was a single sentence.
YOUR FATHER DID NOT DIE BY ACCIDENT.
The room became silent.
I read it again.
Then again.
My father’s death had always been explained as a car accident.
A rainy road.
A tragic mistake.
Nobody questioned it.
Nobody except now.
Mara looked terrified.
“Adrian.”
“What?”
“Stop.”
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
“You need to understand something.”
“What?”
“People who protect secrets this powerful…”
“They don’t let them disappear.”
A sound came from the hallway.
A crash.
Everyone turned.
My security team moved instantly.
A man ran past the open doorway.
He was gone before anyone reached him.
But he left something behind.
A small recording device.
I picked it up.
Pressed play.
My father’s voice filled the room.
“Adrian.”
My entire body froze.
“If you are hearing this…”
“I failed.”
Mara covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
“Your mother will tell you I died protecting the family.”
“She will tell you everything I did was for legacy.”
“That is a lie.”
My hands shook.
“I spent my entire life trying to protect my son from the people closest to him.”
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Then the device played one final message.
A whisper.
A warning.
“Adrian…”
“Do not trust your mother.”
The room went silent.
Because suddenly…
May you like
The enemy was no longer outside my family.
It was inside.
